Review: Zak Olsen, the mastermind behind the guitar work of Australian doom psyche band Orb, unveils his eagerly awaited solo project, Ghost Notes, under the Traffik Island name. Review: There's a lot going on here, and a lot of pure goodness at that. Fans of the Soul Jazz imprint rarely shut up about the label's output quality, and this latest LP from Trees Speak - their second to date - is a case in point. A record that sounds as though it was raised on some of the finest outsider music from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, the whole thing is saturated in pop references but doesn't come across forced or lazy.
You don't have to listen hard to hear the kind of proto-electro and Krautrock that came from the likes of Can, Popul Vuh and Neu!, John Carpenter's movie scores or traits of the No Wave movement that took subterranean New York by storm a few decades ago. Stylistically, the result is a sonic place that has as much attitude as it does edge, equal parts grit and groove, funk and rock, soul and sleaze.

Review: After releasing their debut EP on Sub Pop in 1992 and making the oft-criticised move of moving to a major (Capitol) for their debut LP, they moved back to an independent label for this follow up. Released via Chicago's Thick Records in 1997, it sadly ended up being their final studio album. Despite diminishing early, this is a marvel - not only in terms of their back catalogue, but within indie rock as a whole. There's shades of Grandaddy on 'Leatherette Tears', 'EM7' sounds like it paved the way for Julian Casablancas' vocal style in The Strokes and 'It's On Your Face', which was used in its entirety in Francis Ford Coppola's TV series First Wave, has a terrific, stoned 60s garage rock feel spliced with blues-driven high-energy rock. Without a doubt a standout from a truly great era for rock.

Review: The American musician and guitarist newest album is a collection of compositions that balance melancholia with quiet defiance. From the disorienting, tape-warped opening moments to the album's delicate final waltz, Tyler crafts an introspective instrumental landscape where the past and present converge. 'Cabin Six' starts with a hazy, found-sound texture, its distant hum of static giving way to Tyler's contemplative guitar. It's a track that feels suspended in time, evoking the isolation of its recording process. 'Concern', in contrast, unfurls a luminous melody atop warm strings, the steel guitar lifting the piece into a realm of understated grandeur. It's among Tyler's most affecting compositions, a quiet affirmation amid uncertainty. On 'Star of Hope', the album's spiritual centerpiece, an AM radio-sourced hymn weaves into Tyler's delicate loops, creating a ghostly, celestial resonance. The interplay between organic and electronic texturesitape hiss, processed echoesigrounds the track in a space both intimate and otherworldly. 'Electric Lake' shimmers with ecstatic drone, its weightless progression nodding to La Monte Young, while 'Howling' sways between ambient pastoralism and an undercurrent of discord, its background noise a restless specter.
