Review: Last year, the Africa Express collective headed to Berlin and, under the watchful eye of conductor Andre De Ridder, laid down a recording of Terry Riley's minimalist masterpiece In C. It was particularly fitting, given that it was recorded almost exactly 50 years to the day since the piece, which features 53 musical phrases repeated in sequence at the musicians' discretion, was first performed in public. Featuring an all-star cast of African musicians and like-minded guests (think Brian Eno, Damon Albarn and Yeah Yeah Yeah's guitarist Nick Zinner), it's a playful and thoroughly enjoyable interpretation, with the hypnotic appeal and simple beauty of Riley's original score brought alive via the use of traditional Malinese percussion and instrumentation.

Review: The second album from questionably spelt Canadian five-piece Alvvays doesn't see them straying too far from their comfort zone, but only because they don't particularly need to. Stylistically, the band are good at what they do, snugly nestled in the ethereal pop sound we've come to recognise from groups such as Best Coast, Beach House and Camera Obscura. Clocking in at just over half an hour long, the follow-up to 2014's self-titled debut is kept short and sweet, providing a lean and sentimental album full of jangling guitars, satisfying chord progressions and relatable emotional intelligence that will continue to please current fans, and more than likely enamour a swathe of new ones.

Review: Having hit the road with the likes of New Order, The Subways, Forward, Russia!, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Rakes and Bloc Party, hotly-tipped quartet Battle will release their debut mini-album 'Back To Earth' on October 23rd on Transgressive Records. Produced by Gareth Jones (Wire, The Futureheads, Nick Cave, Interpol and Einsturzende Neubauten) and Jeff Knowler (Super Furry Animals, Blur), highlights of 'Back To Earth' include the Top 40 single 'Tendency', fan favourites 'Isabelle' and 'Wicked Owl' as well as the fervent passion of tracks such as 'One More Night' and 'I Never Stopped'. Prolifically strong songwriters, the band will continue to work on new material for their full-length LP, 'Break The Banks', that will be released in early 2007 and will feature as-yet-unheard material and a re-recorded version of their cult classic single 'Demons' (the original version sold out all 1500 copies of its initial limited edition pressing in the week of release). Aside from working on 'Break The Banks', Battle will play selected shows in September before heading out on a full nationwide tour in October that includes several Club NME shows. A very special London launch show for 'Back To Earth' will be announced imminently.

Review: Second time around for Sydney-based electronica talent Flume's superb, self-titled debut album, which first slipped out Future Classic 12 months ago. Flume was perhaps a little overlooked first time round, which was a crying shame given the quality of his vivacious, synth-pop influenced, Flying Lotus-ish beatscapes and soul-soaked MPC experiments. This expanded reissue presents the original album in all its fluorescent glory, along with two discs jam packed with collaborations (include a notable hook-up with Ghostface Killah), remixes and unheard material. The package also includes a fine live DVD of Flume's infamous hometown show at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney. All in all, a superb package for fans and newcomers alike.

Review: Since their widely lauded 2015 debut 'A Dream Outside', London based four-piece Gengahr have devoted a significant amount of time touring and working on 'Where Wildness Grows' a follow-up that stridently meets expectations. Their music builds on UK indie of the early-mid noughties, with doses of a contemporary psych-pop aesthetic. The songwriting here is ambitious and broad, tracks going from breezy sun-flecked pop, to Maccabees-esque epics, to reverberating soundscapes, to stark angular guitars over almost funk grooves. It's clear just how much time and care the band have put into the record, with every song showcasing their intricate writing, layering and structures. 'Where Wildness Grows' is a lush and urgent sophomore record, and a giant leap forward for the band.
