Review: Given his success in recent years, it's hard to remember a time when few had heard of Brian Pinyero AKA DJ Python. That was certainly the case when he first released Dulce Compania, his debut album, back in 2017. The set was an undeniable success, not only establishing his name but also a trademark sound that combined intergalactic deep house sounds with drumbeats heavily influenced by a variety of global rhythms (most obviously reggaeton). If you missed out first time, it's worth grabbing this vinyl reissue. Highlights include vintage ambient house style shuffler 'Todo Era Azul (Siempre Dub)', atmospheric broken house workout 'Acostados' (where field recordings of distant traffic rise above fluttering synthesizer loops and delicately programmed percussion) and ultra-deep and positive closer 'Yo Ran (Do)'.

Review: Everyone loves DJ Python. Since Brian PiNeyro first stepped into the spotlight around 2017 his blend of dembow rhythms, deep house and dubby tendencies have become widely adored, and for good reason. Gentle enough to roll with in any situation, but instinctively tapped into the fluid physicality of Latin dance culture, it's dreamy party music for sensitive souls. After 2020's excellent Mas Amable album, Python is back on Incienso with a three tracker which shows off the best of his celebrated fusion sound. 'Angel' is an incredibly immersive beat track with crisp percussion up front and gorgeous melodic swathes out the back, while 'TMMD (IMMMD)' locks into something a little catchier without disturbing that pervasive Python chill. 'Club Sentimental Vol Three' is perhaps the highlight though, leaning in on languorous, pitch-bent synth work which sounds exquisite warbling out over the low slung reggaeton pulse.

Dude Compania, his first full-length under any pseudonym, is therefore something of a game-changer. It's rather fine, too, offering a leisurely stroll through attractively intergalactic deep house pastures in the company of tracks built around interesting, off-kilter drum patterns. Highlights are plentiful, from the glacial chords and aqueous melodies of vintage ambient house style shuffler "Todo Era Azul (Siempre Dub)" and atmospheric broken house workout "Acostados" (where field recordings of distant traffic rise above fluttering synthesizer loops and delicately programmed percussion), to the ultra-deep and positive brilliance of closer "Yo Ran (Do)".

Review: DJ Python's hypnotic take on dembow is second to none. The New York DJ and producer can send you wild with the slowest of tempos and does that again here on his second superb album on Incienso. His tactile drum programming weaves and wanders beneath the most bendy and gooey of synth lines. The tension between those percolating drums and the star gazing keys and pads up top is what makes his music so enthralling - life is slowed to a crawl and everything seems to take on more beauty and resonance as a result. Tracks here are variously coloured with eerie vocal samples, field recordings or deconstructed jungle percussion, and every single one snakes its way into your mind, body and soul. "Mas Amable" may just be one of the albums of the year.
