Review: Something of a landmark release for the Diagonal label here as they turn to seminal NYC no-wave troupe Death Comet Crew to helm their first album release. Titled Ghost Among The Crew in honour of the fallen legend Rammellzee, this eight track set is a landmark for Death Comet Crew themselves as it's the band's debut album! Recorded by core Death Comet Crew members Stuart Argabright, Michael Diekman, Shinichi Shimokawa and Nick 'DJ High Priest' Taylor, Ghost Among The Crew features guest spots from Nomi Ruiz of Jessica 6/ Hercules & Love Affair fame, Rapscallion (a friend of Rammellzee's) and Carolyn 'Honeychild' Coleman and truly sounds like Diagonal's description of "chewing up and spitting out fragments of soul, jazz fusion, punk and industrial music". Killer sleeve art once again!

Review: Russell Haswell brings Deep Time, marking his sixth release on Diagonal following a productive 2024, which included the 4x12" compilation 13, on top of a UK-wide tour. Deep Time spans a vast influential range, reflecting Haswell's diverse background in computer music, black metal, noise, techno, and improvisation. Deep Time explores all from geopolitical tension to the incomprehensible scale of time itself, drawing sublime inspiration from his solo trips to the Scottish Hebrides and the rock formations glimpsable there. Album highlight 'Unconformity' references James Hutton's geological discovery and its connection to the Earth's history, with typography for the album sleeve designed by MuirMcNeil.

Review: A respected figure within the world of visual arts, which has seen him exhibit in numerous galleries across the world over the last two decades, Russell Haswell is perhaps best known for his prolific work in the realm of experimental noise. Brandishing a discography that dips back into the late '90s and features a raft of releases across Editions Mego, iDEAL and Warp. Haswell's latest solo album comes courtesy of Powell's increasingly essential Diagonal Records imprint, and sees a shift towards more overtly rhythmic material, with influences including Autechre, Aphex Twin, Adrian Sherwood and Napalm Death. As you'd expect, it's a bracing affair, and one that does a better job than most at connecting the dots between techno and noise.

Review: UK noise maverick Russell Haswell has had an impressive, star-studded career, and we're pleased to see that he's sticking close to the underground thanks to his recent friendship with Powell's Diagonal imprint. After a series of appearances for the lo-fi imprint, Haswell comes through with an album, a whopping seventeen tracks of brutal power electronics and quasi techno. This is the sort of shit you can stand back and be thrown backwards by, or exactly the sort of gear you can layer over DJ sets for added damage. There are pieces such as "Wholly Unaware" and "Gas Attack", which do verge onto the 4/4 sphere. In any case, this is some serious stuff and it comes hotly recommended

NHK - "Binah"
Russell Haswell - "Hypersonic"
Review: Diagonal celebrates its 13th anniversary with a 4x12" release, highlighting both long-time label artists and notable collaborators. LP1 kicks off with a dark, atmospheric remix of Russell Haswell's 'Heavy Handed Sunset' by Autechre, transforming their 2016 version into something more intense. Label boss Powell joins forces with Turner Prize winner Wolfgang Tillmans for a quirky pop experiment, while NHK and Viviankrist deliver moments of striking beauty. Russell Haswell's nod to Cybotron rounds out the set, embodying the boundary-pushing, eclectic spirit that Diagonal has championed for over a decade.

Review: Japanese experimenter Kouhei Matsunaga has been quietly building an exceptional discography as NHK yx Koyxen and the numerous variances. With prior NHK yx Koyxen output on PAN, Skam and Raster Noton, Matsunaga's growing alliance with Powell's Diagonal label makes perfect sense. After debuting on Diagonal last year, he's back with Doom Steppy Reverb, a fresh NHK yx Koyxen LP that expands on his fuzzy, texture-laden, leftfield techno blueprint. So, while there's plenty of industrial-influenced darkness, claustrophobic tape hiss, and redlined rhythms, the Japanese artist also includes quietly beautiful textures and hazy, looped melodies. This is most evident on the foreboding, late night swing of "Y", where the application of dub delays helps emphasize the skewed, doom-laden mood. Superb artwork too!!!

Review: Alessio Natalizia uncovers his new album under the Not Waving guise for Powell's Diagonal Records: a label he has become a stalwart of since the inception of his project a few years ago. The former Walls member and Ecstatic label boss follows up last year's Animals LP with another collection of contorted EBM derivatives - with a quirked-out/tongue-in-cheek approach that is evident throughout the label's entire catalogue. Fresh from a collaboration (which appears here in the form of "Where Are We") and tour with Canadian songstress Marie Davidson, the Good Luck LP features a whole heap of jagged and angular dancefloor experiments. Including the lead single "Me Me Me" of course, as well as many other highlights such as the gnarly acid-punk of "Children Are Our Phuture" or the strobe-lit ketted sing-along that is "Watch Yourself".

Review: In interviews, Alessio Natalazia has freely stated his next album would be "very different" and "very intense". That album, his first for Powell's Diagonal stable, has finally arrived, and it's as ballsy, robust and full-throttle as he promised. While it contains nods to the woozy, shoegaze and ambient influenced soundscapes that have been a feature of his previous full-length excursions, these are well hidden behind clandestine fusions of techno and industrial, surging EBM-influenced workouts, post punk-goes-post rock explorations and atmospheric analogue electronics. For those well versed in his back catalogue, Animals makes for arresting listening. As for newcomers, they'll also find much to enjoy throughout.

Review: Diagonal boss Powell designed the New Beta series as a kind of re-set: an opportunity to go back go basics and make music differently. The first release in the series, which landed earlier this year, was certainly a stripped-back affair, notably free of many of the stylistic flourishes we've come to expect. This follow-up is similarly inclined and sees the lauded producer saunter through tracks that variously doff a cap to weird ambient, bubbly modular electronica, surging, sample-laden post-punk workouts (see "Rudeboy, Let's Funk"), mentalist fusions of jungle and synth-wave ("Drums VIP"), intergalactic noise and tracks that defy easy categorization. There are a few impressively melodious moments dotted throughout, with the colourful "Strobe" standing out.

Review: Always one to keep us on our toes, Diagonal bossman Powell steps away from his XL output for this sudden mini album that's strictly vinyl and likely to be limited. Unpredictably, fizzy, fun and often perplexing, no one blends influences and bends machines quite like this man. From the anarchic double-speed new beat paranoia of "Wormhole" to the weirded out time signature and spasmodic sines of "Dogs On Acid" via the mangled reece and death metal tones of "97", this is Powell at his most comfortable, insincere and experimental. Grab it while you can.

Review: Craig Clouse's Shit & Shine project is more wild, fun and free-spirited than your average industrial inspired, noise-obsessed outfit. This is due, in part, to the project's ever-changing cast-list of drummers, some of whom come to the fore on the amusingly titled Total Shit. It's the outfit's first album for Powell's Diagonal label, and giddily rushes between bombastic fusions of Stomp style percussion and wonky industrial techno, EBM influenced eccentricity, madcap post-disco funkiness (the brilliantly cheeky "Long Island City"), mutant electro (the bizarre but brilliant "I Hate This Machine"), crackpot experimentalism, and tracks that gleefully slither free of genre categorization. In other words, it's a hugely entertaining, imaginative affair, jam-packed with tracks that get better with every listen.

Review: Yes! Powder Horn is the result of Powell's Diagonal label coaxing a new albums worth of material out of Shit & Shine, the masterful project of Texan musician Craig Clouse. Whereas previous Shit & Shine material has seen Clouse working with other musicians, this album is purely his own work and delights on so many levels. It's fairly hard to accurately surmise how this nine track album sounds such is the range of styles covered though Diagonal's description of Powder Horn as a raucous collection of 'deviant funk, wiry disco and burnt-out acid' is pretty on the money. Perhaps it's best to describe it as everything (and more) you'd expect to hear in a Powell DJ set with "Pearl Drop" and "PG13" particular standouts.

Review: London's Diagonal isn't just any techno label. Instead, we prefer to think of them as broadly circulating around the industrial sphere, and whether it's guitars or synthesizers at the artist's disposal, the end result is always quality. This time, for instance, its psych-doom band The Skull Defekts who drop an LP on the imprint. Briefly, the band consists of Joachim Nordwall, Jean-Louis Huhta, Daniel Higgs, Daniel Fagerstrom and Henrik Rylander, and they waste no time in trashing their way five high-powered tracks. Their sound is circular throughout the whole LP, and it's refreshing to hear given the amount of LP's sounding utterly disconnected these days. The only odd one out is "Holy Drums (dub)", an watery, percussive little deviation with less guitar amid its percussive rolls. Beautiful stuff, dig in.

Review: Under his arguably better known Prostitutes alias, Cleveland producer James Donadio has already released an album on Diagonal (2017's industrial techno fired "Dance Tracksz"). This set, credited to his lesser-known StabUdown Productions moniker, is an altogether different beast. While it does make use of some of his regular musical elements - slack and groovy breakbeats, 8-bit electronics, moody bass and dusty machine drums, for starters - it's a far mellower and ear-pleasing affair, with Donadio making greater use of colourful synthesizer lines, drowsy chords, deeper beats and melodies. The result is a varied and highly enjoyable album that's well worth checking.

Review: Earlier this year, Gallhammer member Vivian Slaughter delivered her first solo album, the noisy and intense "Morgenrode". Here the NYC artist dons the Viviankrist alias again for a debut outing on Diagonal. It's a decidedly dystopian affair all told, with Slaughter offering up a mixture of distorted post-apocalyptic soundscapes (see the audio air strikes of "Eleventh"), hard-wired rhythmic pieces (the mind-altering industrial throb of "Blue Iron"), mutilated IDM workouts (the fizzing electronics and tipsy lo-fi beats of "72hours"), surprisingly melodious ambient cuts ("Midnight Sun", "Out of Body", "Behind Mirror") and amphetamine-fuelled dancefloor smashers (the bombastic and eccentric "Tear").
