New Day: Album Sampler #1
Cat: AA 001. Rel: 18 May 15

Deep House
Thursday, 2 AM (original) (6:34)
Thursday, 2 AM (Ron Trent remix dub) (6:33)
0814 (original) (7:30)
0814 (DJ Sneak dubby beats mix) (5:59)
Review: That house legend we all know as Satoshi Tomiie is coming through with his long overdue second album any time soon so it's only right that he'd put out a tasty sampler to get your taste buds going! "Thursday, 2AM" and "0814" are the chosen cuts, the former being totally freaked-out, utterly bumping floor sweeper with a full-bodied low-end and the latter is a filter-heavy-flanger-banger with dicey percussion. On the remix duties we have two legends: Ron Trent who turns in some of his deep, ethereal magic and DJ Sneak who delivers his inimitable 'skip' house style in a dubby mood. It's a pretty special package and it comes heavily recommended.

Review: It's some 26 years since Satoshi Tomiie announced his arrival via the brilliant Tears single with Robert Owens, and 16 since he released his only album, 1999's impressively eclectic Full Lick. New Day, then, is long overdue. While rooted in deep house - see the sensual vocal outing that doubles as the title track - the album's blend of bold synthesizer lines, crunchy electronic instrumentation and analogue drumbeats has more in common with Metro Area than the booming, mid-90s progressive house for which he was once renowned. It's a hugely enjoyable set, all told, with the shuffling, Balearic-influenced house of "Thursday, 2am" standing out.

Phase Space (Freund der Familie, Andrey Pushkarev, Satoshi Tomiie mixes)
N01 (FDF Reshape) (6:37)
Magic Hour (Andrey Pushkarev remix) (6:29)
Phase Space (FDF Rewire Fix) (6:41)
Fast Track (Sato alternate cut) (6:24)
Review: Bonafide and veteran Japanese house legend Satoshi Tommie is back with a second taste of his upcoming new album Magic Hour alongside a selection of fine remixes. First is a Freund der Familie Reshape of 'N01' which is deep, atmospheric and mid tempo techno, while the album's title cut then becomes a swamp, deep, menacing rework from Andrey Pushkarev. Freund der Familie Rewire Fix of 'Phase Space' makes it into a deft, loopy, stuttering workout for the mind and the Satoshi Tommie's Alternate Cut of 'Fast Track' is a killer slow track steeped in dub dynamics.

Echos Cosmiques
Cat: AA 010. Rel: 31 Jan 23

Minimal/Tech House
Un Peu (6:40)
Turn On, Turn Out (7:00)
Echos Cosmiques (7:29)
Review: Last year, veteran Japanese producer Satoshie Tomiie delivered one of his most inspired albums to date, the ultra-atmospheric blend of dub techno, ambient and deep techno that was 'Blue, Black and Grey'. On 'Echoes Cosmique', his first 12" single for two years, the New York-based artist continues to explore dancefloor-ready late night sonics. A-side 'On Peu' is deep tech-house fused with the echoing motifs of dub - all rolling, semi-brekabeat house drums, chunky bass, jazzy cymbals and delay-laden electric piano riffs. In contrast, 'Turn On, Turn Out' smothers a pitched-up, warm-up-friendly hip-hop beat in dreamy chords, weirdo electronics and suspenseful, slowly shifting electric piano sounds. Fellow NYC producer Francois K would no doubt approve.

Magic Hour
Magic Hour (2xLP)
Cat: AALP 003. Rel: 01 Mar 24

Minimal/Tech House
You Are Here (6:24)
No1 (5:21)
Magic Hour (7:22)
Blast (5:37)
A52 (7:17)
Phase Space (6:02)
Meditation In An Emmergency (8:47)
Fast Track (2:14)
Review: After a surprise sojourn last year as Sato, an alias he used to explore ambient and dub techno territory, Satoshi Tomiie has reverted to his given name for solo album number five - a thin return given he made his 12" debut way back in 1989. The New York-based Japanese great is in fine form from the start, effortlessly sashaying between hypnotic deep tech-house (the eyes-closed, early morning excellence of 'You Are Here'), spaced-out dub-house ('Number 1'), chunky-but-dubby deep house of the kind that his friend Francois K would love ('Magic Hour'), acid-flecked minimalism ('Blast'), vintage-sounding dub techno ('A52', 'Meditation in an Emergency'), locked-in soundscape house (the shuffling and yearning 'Phase Space') and sub-heavy ambient dub ('Fast Track').

Wave Dub (6:54)
Wave Dub (DJ Honesty remix version 3) (6:56)
Wave Dub (DJ Honesty remix version 1) (6:38)
Jamming Home (Special vinyl cut) (6:31)
Review: The captivating journey that is US-based house legend Satoshi Tomiie's 'Magic Hour' album on Abstract Architecture persists here with Magic Hour Disk #3: Wave Dub, its third dancefloor-focused instalment. This latest addition comprises four tracks, further enriching the compilation that embodies three years of Satoshi's artistry and commitment. The house sounds are the and elegant, with deft synths and cosmic melodies doing the colour and emotion to his effective grooves. Additionally, the release features two remixes by DJ Honesty, who adds an extra layer of depth and variation to what is a nice and deep, dubby EP from Abstract Architecture.

Insomniaque
Cat: AA 006. Rel: 20 Feb 19

Minimal/Tech House
Gil (8:31)
Insomiaque (6:41)
FRZ (6:41)
Review: House music legend Satoshi Tomiie pushes his all hardware jam sessions forward, this time teaming up with Tokyo's modular synth master Rintaro on his Abstract Architecture label. The Insomniaque EP featuring improvised tracks recorded in one shot, using only physical hardware instruments such as the Eurorack modular system, drum machines, samplers and synthesizers. Features the groovy minimal funk of "Gil", the dark hypnotic afterhours tackle of the title track, to the barely there DJ tool "FRZ", we look forward to the second part on Parisien Yoyaku's YoY.

Dream Sketches
Cat: TOMTOM 001. Rel: 10 Dec 24

Minimal/Tech House
Dream Sketches (7:55)
Bounce 60 (6:01)
Lost Keys (7:08)
Bahnhof 120 (5:49)
Review: Satoshi Tomiie and Tomoki Tamura present their latest EP 'Dream Sketches' for Berlin's Abstract Architecture label. A surreal blend of rattling dub echoes and beat crabs, the pair are seen sat in a recollective room of strange patterns, their skin greyed but facial expressions confident, matching the uncanniness of the EP, littered with both sonic funky foliage and dubious demurrals. 'Dream Sketches' and 'Bounce 60' sound like CAD explosions transposed into abstract sonic space, but theirs is an impossible architectural project, which makes cool noises nonetheless. 'Lost Keys' and 'Bahnhof 120' do rigidify things somewhat, but do not lose that trademark surrealism, that sense of jank.
