Review: Calling on major chords for their riffs, emotional angst for lyrical delivery and motoring juggernauts for basslines, the driving rhythms of Boilermaker were hard to ignore once you found them back in the 1990s. Emerging from the San Diego guitar scene at a time when Gen X was obsessed with post-hardcore, the trio - Terrin Durfey, Tim Semple, and Richard Sanderson - described their counterpoint as 'Leucadia-core'. If you need a lesson in what that means, Not Enough Time To Get Anything Halfway Done is probably the best place to begin. Three albums, a stack of singles and rarities. In total, 41 tracks spread over a sprawling four LP box set with a 24 page book to read while immersing yourself. And yes, there's a test at the end to check you actually paid attention. (Juno legal disclaimer: there is no test).

Review: In the 70s, sharing a name with the main protagonist of the Peanuts comic strip got you nowhere. No, it's talent that got you going: no sooner did the swelling vocal lopes of Charles Brown, only one or two letters remiss of the former identity, blew the band Sleepy Creek away, did they set about recording this establishing record. Then only in high school, Charles Brown nonetheless laid down the eponymous, deeply emotionally intelligent ballad, decrying the retreat into privacy as a misappropriation of the act of love. Now on top of this star single comes this 15-song LP, which gathers Brown's solo and band work from 1976-82; Jon Freeman's enclosed essay dissects the origin story of this private press pioneer.

Review: This is a special ivory white vinyl version of Zani Diabate's Super Djata Band is another essential release from Numero Group. The band was a leading force in Mali's music scene during the 1980s when they blended Wasulu hunter music, griot praises, Senufo dances, Fula and Mandingo tunes with Western psychedelia, blues, and Afrobeat. Their 1982 album captures Diabate's virtuosity and is a showcase of his mastery of the guitar through eight compelling tracks. The resulting album is a gold standard in world music that confirms Diabate's place among the legendary West African guitarists and illustrates his unique ability to fuse diverse musical traditions.

In 1982 their album cemented Diabate's place among legendary West African guitarists as he mesmerised listeners with eight vibrant compositions featuring plenty of his hypnotic guitar work. Now it gets reissued on Numero Group and the record solidifies his status as a mythic figure in West African music so for anyone with an appreciation of house styles it is a must.

Review: DR Hooker's 1972 debut album, The Truth, is a masterpiece of hippy psychedelia and evangelical Christianity. Hooker's transformation from a substance-abusing hippy to a Bible basher is reflected in the lyrics, with tracks like 'Forge Your Own Chains' highlighting his battle with addiction and the album's eclectic mix of smooth balladry, rock standards, and experimental sound effects makes it a fascinating listen. Privately pressed with just 99 copies originally, this album is one of the rarest records of all time. Hooker assembled a group of local musicians for recording sessions at Dynamic Recording Studios in New Haven, Connecticut. The musicians' remarkable performances, including a ferocious piano solo on 'Fall In Love,' add to the album's allure. The Truth remains accessible to new audiences. This 2024 reissue on cobalt blue vinyl captures the album's mystique and enduring appeal.

Review: This wonderful album (with equally wonderful artwork) presents a rich, percussive experience that highlights Cuban-born Modesto Duran's significant influence on Latin music and this version is on nice translucent red wax which conveys the heat the music. Duran was a protege of mambo pioneer Perez Prado and his distinctive percussion work graced numerous 1950s hits by artists like Esquivel, Belafonte, Eartha Kitt, and Lena Horne. On his 1960 solo debut, Duran brought together top conga players Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, and Juan Cheda to craft a cinematic fusion of Afro-Cuban, cha-cha, and exotic jazz styles.

Review: Margo Guryan's Take a Picture is a charming artifact of late '60s pop, blending the orchestral sophistication of Burt Bacharach with the dreamy resonance of early Belle & Sebastian. Guryan, a seasoned songwriter with credits including Ornette Coleman and Harry Belafonte, crafted a singular album that's both a lush time capsule and a showcase of her unique vision. Now released on gold vinyl, the production is richly adorned with horns, strings, and sweet harmonies, creating a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Tracks like 'Sunday Morning' (later covered by Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell) and 'Sun' radiate a carefree energy, capturing the essence of Sunshine Pop. Ballads like 'Think Of Rain' and 'Thoughts' are very nostalgic, while 'Love' intriguingly veers into Psychedelic Rock. Take a Picture endures as a delightful reminder of its era, offering a glimpse into a bygone musical sensibility with Guryan's endearing, Doo-Wop-inspired vocals at its core.

Review: Margo Guryan's solo album, Take A Picture, originally released in 1968, has attained cult status for its enchanting blend of honeyed vocals and sophisticated songwriting. Known for her influence on soft-pop and dream-pop genres, Guryan's album features the iconic track 'Sunday Morning,' later covered by Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell. This reissue, now available on vinyl, features Guryan's jazz background shining through in her meticulous compositions, which have been praised for their funky sunshine arrangements and lush melodies. As a renowned songwriter, her works have been performed by artists ranging from Astrud Gilberto to Harry Belafonte. Take A Picture stands as a bridge between Burt Bacharach's sophistication and the indie pop stylings of Belle & Sebastian, influencing artists like the Wondermints and even inspiring Diablo Cody during the creation of Juno. Despite critical acclaim, Guryan preferred the role of songwriter over performer, reflecting her dedication to musical craft and independence from the spotlight.

Review: Numero's comprehensive collection, Words and Music, offers a deep dive into the eclectic catalog of cult singer-songwriter Margo Guryan. Beyond her viral hit 'Why Do I Cry?', Guryan's music showcases a breadth of scope that extends far beyond the Billboard charts. Trained in jazz and inspired by the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, her 1968 debut album Take A Picture exemplifies her ambition and talent, blending bright harmonies, cheeky lyrics, and taut breaks with unusual jazz flourishes. Despite initial obscurity, Guryan's music found renewed appreciation in the 90s and beyond, with tracks like 'I Don't Intend to Spend Christmas Without You' gaining traction. Numero's exhaustive set includes her entire discography, from the Take A Picture LP to vintage demos and unreleased recordings, showcasing Guryan's evolution from her early jazz influences to her later chamber pop experiments. Words and Music is a testament to Guryan's enduring musical legacy and wide-ranging influences.

Review: Margo Guryan, best known for penning hits like 'Sunday Morning,' had a musical vision that extended far beyond the Billboard charts. A jazz student who collaborated with Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, Guryan found inspiration in the Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds,' which led her to create the organ-led 'Think of Rain' for her 1968 debut album, 'Take A Picture.' Despite its commercial potential, the album, filled with bright harmonies, cheeky lyrics, and jazz flourishes, failed to break through due to Guryan's disinterest in touring and the label's lack of promotion. Guryan's music was rediscovered in the 90s, with renewed interest sparked by Saint Etienne's cover of 'I Don't Intend to Spend Christmas Without You.' In 2001, she released a set of vintage demos, reconnecting with a new generation of fans. Following her passing in 2021, her track 'Why Do I Cry?' went viral, prompting Numero to compile her entire discography into an exhaustive set. This collection includes 'Take A Picture,' additional tracks from Beatball Records' 2009 edition, the '25 Demos' album and 16 unreleased recordings. Spanning from 1956 to 1975, this compilation showcases Guryan's evolution from her early jazz-influenced tracks to her later ambitious chamber pop, reflecting her wide-reaching musical inclinations and unique wordplay.

Review: Sandy Harless' Songs album represents the Chillicothe, Ohio artist's sole foray into cosmic American music. It came during the 1970s and the height of the hippy movement's mellow phase and was, rather remarkably, funded by a business breeding 27 aquariums of fish. The record blends Appalachian roots with a rich mix of mountain folk, rural rock, and pastoral country. It's brilliantly authentic throughout and is a great representation of "real people" music that captures the essence of the era's down-to-earth vibe. It's one to put on around a campfire on a balmy summer's evening.

Review: Hankerers after 90s band musicians turned Y2K solo electronica artists will water at the mouth at the first play of this one. Her Space Holiday was the first-time solo alias of Marc Bianchi, the American indietronic musician known for his membership of the bands Indian Summer and Calm. Turning his hand to solo soundcraft at the turn of the millennium, and releasing under Skylab and Tiger Style - the latter of which saw to the release of the first edition of this record, albeit with a different sleeve design - Bianchi's solo output would echo the post-hardcore humours that characterised his group work, except for the fact that it would also somewhat electronify them into contrition, resulting in every logical conclusion from lasery broadcast neofolk ('Snakecharmer') to anxiolytic hyperballad emo ('Through The Eyes Of A Child').

Review: It has been two decades since we last heard a peep out of post-emo triplet Karate. Thankfully, the one thing that hasn't changed in that time is their deft songwriting abilities - striking a sumptuous balance between jazz-blues, unplugged pop-punk-grunge-garage, and some other bits in between. Folk this ain't, but it feels cut from a cloth that's stored close by, at least. Here we are, then, with Geoff Farina offering us ten new tracks with help from long-time partner on this project, Andy Hong. 35 minutes of beautiful songwriting, exceptional guitar work, and a mood that's somewhere between sombre, chilled out, and primed to explode, this might be one of the most re-listenable rock records we have had the pleasure of writing about in some time. In fact, it is.

Review: Released in 1979 on Decca's Afrodisia imprint, Horizon Unlimited stands as a landmark in the Lijadu Sisters' discography. Produced by Fela Kuti's collaborator Odion Iruoje, and featuring BLO's Laolu Akins and Lemmy Jackson, this album blends raw funk with seductive electricity. The six tracks on this reissue are a masterclass in merging traditional rhythms with modern funk, exemplified in songs like 'Orere-Elejigbo,' 'Erora,' and 'Come On Home.' Each track opens with talking drums, weaving intricate percussion with fluid basslines and subtle synth tones. The Lijadu Sisters' harmonies remain the focal point, gliding over hypnotic grooves that maintain their freshness without becoming repetitive.
