The Butterfly
Cat: ARGOT 017. Rel: 21 Mar 16

Deep House
Butterfly (The Monarch) (7:22)
Black Mass (7:33)
Many False Prophets (5:33)
Review: Chicago's underground house hero and Vanguard Sound main man Amir Alexander appears next up on Windy City imprint Argot with The Butterfly EP, which is quite impressive we must say. A side track "Butterfly (The Monarch)" is one of those dark dancefloor drama tracks in the vein of legends like Carl Craig with its stern and cynical monologue backed by a brooding composition. Things get a bit fiercer on "Black Mass" though: this is dark and emotive techno soul done properly. On the flip it's also worth mentioning "Many False Prophets" equally as emotional and bittersweet where swirling and hypnotic pads distract you from an incredibly fierce 909 drum machine workout. Wicked stuff!

1, 2, 3 (Feels Right) (8:01)
Hide Tide (6:22)
Spin Cycle (5:39)
The Bog (6:57)
Review: The Supply crew's John Barera and Will Martin team up again but this time it's for Steve Mizek's Argot imprint, and the duo have duly supplied their familiarly dusty brand of house music. The title track "1 2 3 (Feels Right)" is sparse, raw as hell and synth-heavy, while "Hide Tide" is a little ore low-key and loose around the edges. Over on the B-side, "Spin Cycle" unleashes a bubbling low-end underneath a grainy, swinging kick-snare approach, whereas "The Bog" winds the tempo right down resulting in a wonderfully abstract vision of house and techno.

Lady Of Sorrows EP
Cat: ARGOT 006. Rel: 28 Jun 13

Deep House
A Jealous Heart Never Rests (8:06)
We Can Never Be Apart (7:30)
Review: Emerging last year, Chicago based producer The Black Madonna has developed a wonderfully colorful and rich slant on her hometown sound across releases for Stripped & Chewed and Hometaping Is Killing Music. Aligning with local operation Argot makes sense given the label's own output since launching roughly a year ago and the Lady Of Sorrows EP is some of her best work thus far. As you'd expect from the title, there's a certain mournful tone to both the productions here, yet it's well measured as opposed to over bearing. On "A Jealous Heart Never Rests" for example, this sense of sadness manifests itself in the soaring strings that open proceedings, though it's her skilful 303 manipulation that grabs your attention. On the flip "We Can Never Be Apart" the orchestration is even more impressive, making for a rather epic introduction from which The Black Madonna shifts into a satisfying mid tempo stomp through glistening disco flecked house.

Aquifer EP
Cat: ARGOT 011. Rel: 13 Oct 14

Techno
Crystalis
Patent Lies
Subterranean Limestone
Sunken Water Table
Review: Following a couple of low-key releases on the excellent Detroit label Crisis Urbana, experimental house and techno producer Community Corporation joins the Argot family. Predictably, pinning down the sound of Aquifier is tricky. Contrast, for example, the dub-influenced deep house looseness of "Sunken Water Table" - all tumbling keys and strange noises - with the clanking rhythms, mutant bass and ghetto-tech inspired swing of "Crystalis". "Patent Lies" and the more Detroit-influenced "Subterranean Limestone", meanwhile, sound like a tougher, more out-there take on the heady sound of the Mood Hut and Future Times camps. Regardless, it's an excellent EP.

Eve Of Gentrification (6:42)
Eve Of Gentrification (Terrence Parker Deeep Detroit heat remix) (6:54)
Review: Steve Mizek's Argot label has brought to light some of the most interesting artists in the house and techno underground over the last few years. Running the label out of Chicago, Mizek has focussed on releasing the bubbling talent that he's found around him. For his new 'white label' series, the shadowy Contakt (Local Action, Icee Hot) comes through with a deep-as-hell, percussion-heavy house number in the form of "Eve Of Gentrification". On the flip we have a rather special appearance as house legend Terrence Parker takes care of the remix duties, turning the original into a jazzy, piano-led house ballad for lovers of that soulful sound. Tight as hell.

Species Of Comedy
Review: Steve Mizek's Chicago-based Argot label is usually a reliable source of formidable dancefloor fare from currently hot or fast-rising talents. Previously, the label has showcased work from The Black Madonna, Gunnar Haslam, Pittsburgh Track Authority and Amir Alexander. Here, Mizek has managed to coax some new original material out of Mister Saturday Night main man Eamon Harkin. There's an intoxicating, psychedelic intensity about the early '90s British techno influences on the moody, string-laden, acid-flecked "Species of Comedy". "Back Down", meanwhile, is a much more robust affair, with nagging hooks and twisted riffs riding a balls-out techno groove.

Nevenoe
Review: Gunnar Haslam's debut LP for L.I.E.S. arrived with typically little fanfare and turned out to be one of the most striking debuts the label has put out, delivering 10 tracks of downtempo techno sketches which showed the unheralded producer to have a quite distinct style. His follow up arrives on Argot, and sees the producer focusing more specifically on the dance floor, with three tracks that sound much more full bodied than on his debut. "Bera Range" sees a clattering combination of hi-hats and snare rolls contrasted with its laid back synth waves and dystopian melodies, a theme carried forward into "Optional", which combines a brooding '80s horror movie drone with lighter snatches of melody and almost jazz-like drums. "Nevenoe" is a fittingly queasy end to proceedings, its snatches of North African musical textures floating forth on a billowing cloud of bass.

Go Home
John Kronk
Astronomical Twilight
Review: Rising out of the unknown, Detroit producer Elizabeth Merrick-Jefferson makes a worthy debut on the Argot label. Prior to this twelve inch, Merrick-Jefferson's only credited track was the unreleased "Bubo Blakistoni", used by Alex Israel in his LWE podcast, and the man Israel has taste so it's no wonder LWE editor Steve Mizek has sought out further productions from her for his Argot label. "Go Home" is a flurry jacking drums and gnarling synths that sound like Kraftwerk on overdrive, while "John Kronk" - cut from the same cloth as the aforementioned - is less hectic, with a melodious synth line and lighter percussive elements nipping softly in the background. "Astronomical Twilight" sees Merrick-Jefferson round out her debut EP with animated electro beats, subtle phasing effects and chiming Drexciya-like arpeggios that sound like they were played at high terrestrial altitude in a hypobaric chamber.

Crosstown Blvd
Review: The Pittsburgh Track Authority trio of Thomas Cox, Preslav Lefterov and Adam Ratana continue to flourish, here joining the Argot ranks having previously impressed for Uzuri, Further, Love What You Feel and their own Pittsburgh Tracks label. Those expecting a well judged exposition of deep house and techno however will be surprised by both lead track "Giza" and its B Side accompaniment which demonstrate a charming flexibility to their collective production palette. "Giza" is a resplendent slice of 2-step, the swift rhythmic touches blessed by luminescent melodic patterns and rapid orchestral edits that are reminiscent of a love struck FaltyDL. Complementing this, the trio engage their love of electro with the squiggly subaqueous flex of "Crosstown Blvd".

Walk Up
Thick Nostalgia
Review: Policy first came to the fore with a debut release on Rush Hour's seemingly dormant Direct Current imprint back in 2011, focusing on the kind of summery, garage-indebted house music that called to mind Sepalcure and FaltyDL. A second release then followed on the highly active Rush Hour Recordings. Policy now brings his old school combination of shuffling drum machines, classic NYC electro and submerged funk to the Argot label with the Hit Gone bad EP. The title track is trippy in nature thanks to twinkling and transposing percussion, subject to quick fire flashes of disco that shoot across its face. Hallucinogenic synths then maneuver n sporadic burst in "Walk Up", while the deep and jazzy grooves of "Thick Nostalgia" are perfect for a lounge room waltz with a loved one or cheeky night cap.

27 Summers
Review: Last seen on William Burnett's W.T. Records with the varied yet consistently bumping house of Alright, Pittsburgh-based Chase Smith returns with the Stay 12" for Argot, which shows him to be just as adept at creating the kind of classicist yet undeniably forward-thinking dance music as his hometown peers Pittsburgh Track Authority. "Stay" offers a prime cut of uplifting contemporary disco music steeped in soul, while "27 Summers" raises the tempo and throws some ravey piano chords and brass into blender to deliver one of the best bit of peak time house we've so far this year.

Drum Thoughts (6:38)
Second Thoughts (5:26)
First Thought (4:17)
Review: If you're unaware of T.B Arthur, you're not alone. To date, the mysterious producer has released a handful of 12" singles, mostly in ludicrously limited quantities, with little or no information. Here, he (or she) pops up on Argot for the first time, delivering a trio of cuts that swap intense acid and bustling techno for murky textures and tribal-influenced drum rhythms. A-side "Drum Thoughts" sets the tone, channelling some kind of dark, late night voodoo via intense, African-influenced drums, sparse melodies and dubwise textures. "Second Thoughts" is a more straightforward techno chugger - albeit with lashings of ghostly spookiness - while "First Thought" sits somewhere between classic dub house, murky tech-house and rolling techno.
