Review: Superior Viaduct never cease to amaze and please all of our senses; from aural to olfactory, we're always trying sniff out what these mighty archivalists are up to. Yet again, they've picked the right sort of gear to please newbies and vintage diggers alike thanks to this resurrection of John Bender's glorious and pioneering minimal work from 1980. I Don't Remember is a serious piece of forward-thinking, seven majestic piece of experimental synthism that are both timeless and bound by an icy layer of machine fuzz, an edgy yet poppy feel that sits perfectly with the rest of the label's activities. Reissue of the week? We think so. Limited, stamped, and comes in bloody red.

Review: A record that has always carried a certain renegade mystique, 'Plaster Falling' originally arrived in 1981 with its white sleeve literally covered in the plaster of the title, meaning the purchaser was forced to cut it open to get at the sounds within. Once there however, the Suicide-style minimal electronica, as stark as it was alluring was its own reward. This Superior Viaduct reissue is the first time these blankly beguiling strains, lurking somewhere stylistically on the astral plane between the no wave of Ike Yard and the off-kilter modern romance of John Maus, have been available once again for the curious and the synth-addicted alike.

The Ascension (13:12)
Review: Precious few figures have been so instrumental in the reinvention of the guitar than Glenn Branca, whose guitar orchestras turned clanging dischord into overwhelming architectural beauty, who married the intensity of punk rock with the no-boundaries approach of modern composition, and whose influence on Sonic Youth (in fact, their core member Lee Renaldo appears on this album) was to act as an evolutionary progenitor for a rock revolution from the 80s and beyond. The Ascension is one of his finest works, a stirring, challenging and pulse-racing marriage of visceral roar and avant-garde innovation that has lost none of its power and potency in the last thirty-two years.

Lesson No 1 For Electric Guitar
Dissonance
Bad Smells
Review: Avant-garde composer and guitarist Glenn Branca appears on the archival-focused Superior Viaduct, a label based out of San Francisco that trawls deep to release rare recordings from the likes of Devo, Talking Heads and Ramones affiliate Craig Leon, and San Franciscan punk band The Avengers. This release from Branca, whose label Neutral Records released the first few tracks by Sonic Youth, provided Superior Viaduct with three jangly guitar tracks of his own, spread across two discs. "Lesson No 1 For Electric Guitar" has the slightest of Celtic touches (and Cagean titles) in a progressive and emotionally strummed guitar-lead composition, while "Dissonance" almost sounds like a cheeky reinterpretation of the Batman theme. It's "Bad Smells", though, that will strike a familiar chord with fans of Silent Servant to the aforementioned Sonic Youth. Rock on.

The Sinking Of The Titanic (24:24)
Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (24:04)
Review: A monolithic entry into the canon of longform ambient, experimental classical music, Gavin Bryars' The Sinking Of The Titanic receives the reissue treatment via Superior Viaduct. The record was initially produced by Brian Eno in 1975 as the first release on Obscure, and the title piece found Bryars fixating on the ill-fated luxury cruise liner through the perspective of its passengers. It's a haunting and engrossing piece with imperceptible layers of detail woven into its fabric. The accompanying piece, 'Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet', is equally important, revolving around a tape loop of a street singer and bringing the work of players such as Michael Nyman and Derek Bailey into the composition which builds into a powerful crescendo. Quite simply, a seminal work.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record ever so slightly warped with slight surface marks but otherwise in excellent condition***

The Pavilion Of Dreams was first conceived by Harold Budd in the early 1970s. He started writing an extended cycle of compositions that were produced by Brian Eno. Also appearing in the session were saxophonist Marion Brown and a pair of multi-instrumentalists in Gavin Bryars and Michael Nyman. The album was a cathartic one for Budd who said at the time that is "erased my past," and lead to a musical rebirth. "It was like my Magna Carta." It sure is a soothing listen, with heavenly ambient sounds, mellifluous chords and glowing harmonies all soothing the mind, body and soul as they gently unfold.

Excerpts From The Naked Lunch (24:20)
Excerpts From Nova Express (17:59)
Review: Readings (excerpts) from legendary American figure of the beat generation William S Burroughs from two of his most famous books. The Nova Express was part of a Trilogy, alongside The Soft Machine and The Ticket That Exploded. It employed the infamous 'fold-in' method of writing which involved re-assembling different variations of texts into the novel, almost like a literary remix or Dadaist poem. Naked Lunch was considered the sequel to the trilogy; a semi-autobiographical story which follows the protagonist William Lee and his struggles with substance abuse across the globe, but mainly in the dreamlike Interzone while in Tangier.

Review: cLOUDDEAD's debut album, a compilation of six 10" EPs released between 2000 and 2001, remains a quintessential example of abstract hip-hop. This expansive 3xLP, characterised by its dense, enigmatic soundscapes and avant-garde lyrics, has profoundly influenced a range of sub-genres such as cloud rap, hauntology, and lo-fi hip-hop. The trioiWhy?, Doseone, and Odd Nosdamiemerged from Cincinnati's vibrant underground scene, marked by events like Scribble Jam, and later moved to the Bay Area, where they helped establish the Anticon collective. Despite their shift to the West Coast, their Midwestern origins continued to shape their sound, rooted in the eclectic and experimental spirit of their early days. As noted in Chris Martin's liner notes, cLOUDDEAD's music was a unique blend of idiosyncratic vision and audacious experimentation. Each EP in this collection offers a distinct auditory experience. Tracks like 'Apt. A' and 'And All You Can Do Is Laugh' are emblematic of their surreal style, combining nonsensical lyrics and unconventional production. Nosdam's production seamlessly transitions from ambient textures reminiscent of Flying Saucer Attack to gritty drum breaks and esoteric samples. Restored by Nosdam and accompanied by a poster, this edition of cLOUDDEAD's pioneering sound, is the ideal version to get.

Review: German outfit Cluster continue to reissue of some of their most vital albums. They are a band that had an influence on artists like Brian Eno, John Foxx and Coil from their 1971 debut Cluster 71 onwards. They were fine fusionists who collided cold wave and synth sounds with disorientating atmospherics, feedback and noise as this second album in 1972 shows. It was made by the reduced duo of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius on all tracks although the third member Conny Plank is credited as a composer. It was the band's first release for Krautrock label Brain with more to follow until 1975.

Review: German outfit Cluster were pioneers in the world of prog rock, Kraut and experimental early electronic music some 50-odd years ago. Their music still resonates to this day - and fetches high prices for those willing to pay it - but thankfully reissues like this keep it available to those of us more interested in the music than the format or the investment value. This one is rooted in cold wave and synth elegance, with its loose-limbed rhythms and bendy chords, cosmic intonations and ever-optimistic melodies all making for a brilliantly unique listen and cosmic journey.

Review: John and Alice Coltrane's Cosmic Music has long been considered one of spiritual jazz's greatest moments. The album was recorded in 1966 and '68, features amongst its backing players the mighty Pharoah Saunders, and was initially released as an ultra-limited "private press" record by Alice Coltrane following her husband's death. It was, of course, later brought to wider attention by an official Impulse Records release, though this reissue boasts Alice Coltrane's original private press artwork. Variously out-there, discordant, effervescent and hugely atmospheric, tracks like "Lord Help Me To Be" and "Rev. King" still sound groundbreaking and mind-altering all these years on.

Review: Coming to a 'lounge-smoke' coloured vinyl edition, now you truly can 'Buy' The Contortions' breakout LP once more. Released over 35 years ago, this is a unique classic album in the microgenre that was no wave, which took New York by storm in a strange coalescent fog of art punk, new wave and cold noise. Legend has it that either this album or the man who created it - James Chance, our main Contortionist (by trade a saxophonist) - was one of the core inspirations behind Brian Eno's coinage of the genre name 'no wave', after the latter witnessed a live performance of said bittersweetly vapid music. As plastic avant-garde beats melt into liquid skies, this one isn't to be missed.

Review: The seminal Austin Texas punk band Dicks' Kill From The Heart album gets a full and proper reissue. Formed in 1980, Dicks original lineup included Gary Floyd (vocals), Glen Taylor (guitar), Buxf Parrot (bass), and Pat Deason (drums). The influence of this album spread far across other key bands after Dicks breakup in 1986. Mudhoney, Butthole Surfers and The Jesus Lizard all regularly played covers of Dicks' songs. The band reunited a handful of years ago to wide spread appeal. San Francisco's Superior Viaduct records should be applauded for putting out this genuine slice of life.
