Podcast On Vinyl No 1: Hardcore Listing
Cat: LEWIS 1064LP. Rel: 02 Oct 20

Hip Hop/R&B
Track 1 (21:25)
Track 2 (21:11)
Review: Chris Glasson and Stu Whiffen's Hardcore Listing Podcast has over 1 million downloads and is part of Scroobius Pip's Distraction Pieces Network. Now a first instalment is pressed to vinyl, and features the one and only record don and scratch master DJ Yoda talking on his favourite golden era Hip-Hop albums. The whole thing was recorded in one take and wasn't edited afterward. There are plenty of personal stories included along the way making this a perfect accompaniment to a cosy home listening session.

My Energy (feat Eva Lazarus) (3:31)
Lesson 1956 (feat Jamie Cullum & DJ Woody) (4:06)
Review: Legendary turntablist and acclaimed beat maker DJ Yoda is back with a new album Prom Nite this month. Just before the full-length drops comes this single from it on essential 7". It follows on from the well-received 'Feel Like Home' 45rpm last month and this time offers more well-conceived and carefully sought-out fusions. The a-side 'My Energy' features Eva Lazarus. It is a lovely soulful slow jam that has a breakup melancholy to it and lovely doo-wop vibes. Completing this package is the flip side 'Lesson 1956' (feat Jamie Cullum & DJ Woody) which is another great revisiting of Americana.

London Fields (feat Joel Culpepper) (3:49)
London Fields (instrumental) (3:49)
Review: Pioneering deck technician, scratch DJ, hip-hop master and sometime restaurateur DJ Yoda is doing a fine job of showing us his more sensitive time of late. After his super sweet 7" with Nubya Garcia he now joins forces with Joel Culpepper. This most sublime vocalist croons over laid back and jazzy beat work from Yoda. Deep, tumbling bass adds weight to 'London Fields' while Culpepper's soulful and pained vocal really hits the mark in some style. An instrumental is included on the flip which is just as blissed out, but allows the noodling sax more room to breathe.

Don't Mean A Thing (feat Beardyman) (3:27)
Review: Renowned turntable technician and beat maker DJ Yoda's with album spaced with standout singles. It is a record couched in retro Americana with plenty of high profile guests including the likes of Beardyman, Choosey, The House Gospel Choir, Jamie Cullum & DJ Woody and O Love. These tracks show how far Yoda has come from a crowd pleasing DJ used to cutting up and scratching a dizzying array of sounds to a cultured producer who can craft plenty of great grooves as well as moving emotions. Much of it is made from live instrumentation with a healthy dose of nostalgia next to inventive new styles.

Review: Hometown Heroes are the slick supergroup made up of audiovisual evangelist DJ Yoda, soundsystem shocker Brad Baloo of The Nextmen, and legendary rhyme supplier Edo G hailing from Boston. With the former two names hailing from London, UK, this latest collab makes for yet another heady, across-the-pond communication in sound. The eponymous record, following up April's 'Talk About It' pre-release single, amounts to a nostalgic, scratch-heavy foray into chill boom-bap with Britcore production overtones, making for a niche but skill-flaunting sound, with much wisdom, advice and love poured in.

Review: Should you be that travel agent searching for the original sound of 60s-70s in your funk, soul, psychedelic rock and folk today, then Will Dorey, aka Skinshape, is your partner in time. Tracks on the album sometimes comes across as easy to compare with a stream of other admired acts like Air ("After Midnight") to Beck and Australia's Tame Impala on "Metanoia" and "Life As One". Throughout the LP, furthermore, Skinshape's fourth, it's hard to not escape hints of French inspirations in its sometimes jazzy inspirations, with flickers of the 1973 soundtrack to the film La Planete sauvage (Fantastic Planet) never too far off. A highly recommended listen!

Review: Talk about fitting titles for an album. Skinshape has pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one, presenting a lush and intoxicating 11 tracks of calm (or, perhaps more accurately, cool) waters waiting for you to float on. These are pieces informed by 1960s movie scores, 70s funk, southern US psychedelic blues, and all manner of genres and subgenera that place an emphasis on sticky heat tempos, guitar licks, and a feeling of keeping one eye on the rear view mirror while cruising imagined highways.

Another triumph by the artist, if those descriptions aren't really cutting it then think the quietest ends of Khruanbin, Bonobo on a beach day, and El Michels Affair at their most soulful and cinematic. Transportive stuff, while purposefully informed and influenced by songs of the past, somehow Skinshape manages to paint fresh mental pictures with these familiar brushes.

Turn Away (3:38)
Dreams Of Panama (3:42)
Review: If you don't know William Dorey already then chances are you're about to realise you've been missing out on quite the artist. Working as Skinshape, he's managed to garner a quiet cult following for his relatively quiet music, designed to unwind to, allow worries of the day to unwind, and dissipate into a concoction of psychedelic pop, downtempo electronica and dubby grooves.
Turn Away, a two-track single featuring titular piece and 'Dreams of Panama' is the latest case in point. Sublime melodies and deceptively advanced acoustic guitar work set to lackadaisical rhythms and beat patterns, soothing brass and synthesised strings helping capture a real mood. Which, specifically, is all about slowing down, and taking time to appreciate the moment. Designed to transport you to far away places, real and imagined, it sounds reductive to say these are bonafide travelling tunes but they are. The real joy is they also sound incredible when standing still.

Review: As the story goes, Will Dorey's Skinshape project grew out of a love for "old music and the way it sounded". And while his discography suggests he's only been releasing music for some six years there's no denying the raw, dusty and retroactive fidelity of his recordings. Mixed entirely by Dorey, the Englishman's embrace of yesteryear takes in a particular blend of psychedelic rock and folk that meets with touches of jazz, soul and classical, with a range of subtle echoes, dub delays and reverberations added to the mix. Take "Penny In A Well" and "Hurry & Enjoy" for example, two of the shorter tracks on the LP but flying examples of Dorey's creative versatility. Kick back and enjoy!

Review: You don't just hear the 1970s funk influences in Skinshape's music, you can feel them too - especially if you're doing the right thing soundsystem-wise. Tracks like 'The Eastern Connection' could almost be swapped-in for a Dilated Peoples instrumental, all lackadaisical roll and hot, balmy air. In actual fact, it's the work of Dorset, UK maestro, Will Dorey.

An accomplished musician with a significant back catalogue (make a note), the whole album struts, strides and strolls its way through intoxicating grooves. Half the time it's hard to know whether you should be kicking back on a tropical veranda slowly sipping on a fresh Old Fashioned. But then it's more timeless than vintage. Using elements of psyche, soul and sticky blues, while'Losing My Mind' is perhaps the apex - a heartfelt vocal slow jam that's made for tears before bed - there's more emotion in the crooning guitars alone here than many vocalists could hope to muster with words.

Crazy (2:36)
Review: Based out of Brooklyn, New York, The Still Brothers is a group made up of two childhood friends, Andrew LeCoche of Ula Ruth and Evan Heinze from The Shacks. They started their musical adventure way back in the 6th grade. In the decade since they have managed to record and tour with their own respective groups, as well as work on their own distinctive brand of indie together. Here they tap up Sloshy for a feature on a new 7" that comes via Lewis. 'It's Not Over' is a dreamy cut lush vocal harmonies and lo-fi drums making for a beautifully melancholic sound. 'Crazy' has slightly more primate drum breaks and the Shoshy is just as smooth.
