The New York-based newcomer brings his “live, windy, paradoxical” house and techno to the label’s vinyl arm.
Emma Olson’s productions have always been arranged in a minimal way. Being the product of playing around with drum machines in her room, her music under the name UMFANG tends to be bare-boned and percussive heavy. As a DJ, Olson has an inclination to play hard, fast and powerful techno but her own output is a lot more restrained and slow. In 2015, she put out a group of tracks titled OK as her 1080p debut. While some may have categorised it as an album, Olson viewed it in a different light – describing OK as a collection of DJ tools.

Break World Records will release the New York-based artist’s latest long player.
Some artists make you wait years between releases, drip feeding samples and new information until the music’s eventual release, which can never quite match the anticipation. New York’s Jiovanni Nadal takes a practically polar opposite approach. In less than two years he’s put together 10 collections of sooty, loose-limbed house under the name J Albert, often on taste-making labels like Black Opal and Ital’s Lovers Rock.

Thanks to the combined efforts of 1080p, Mood Hut, Pacific Rhythm and Normals Welcome, few can have missed the continuing rise of Canadian electronic music. These labels, and the homegrown talents who record for them, have spent the past few years beguiling us with dreamy, raw, vividly colourful music that blends a range of late ‘90s/early ‘90s sounds – often made entirely on similarly vintage – with a hazy, almost horizontal approach to life. Many of the artists involved – think Pender Street Steppers, Florist, Lnrdcroy, Hashman Deejay, Cloudface and Aquarian Foundation – have become much-discussed underground heroes, with their cassettes and records exchanging hands for large sums of money.
The Dutch pair will debut on the Vancouver label later this month with the Center Parcs EP.
It seems appropriate that LNS should title her debut release after a mountain range located in the westernmost part of Canada. To the uninitiated, LNS is the alias of respected Vancouver DJ Laura Sparrow, who dispatched a sublimely mixed and emotive entry into the Trushmix series back in September. It’s plain to see why she has been winning over dance floors in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
The debut album from the New York artist will surface on her own label She Rocks.
The Normals Welcome man will release the Baikal Acid 12″ on the Vancouver label next month.
