NHK yx Koyxen – Doom Steppy Reverb

DSR

Diagonal has never really been the place for techno, but by bending, warping and crunching the genre out of shape it can fit; like a parallelogram bashed to shape a nonagon. It’s these broken remnants and off cuts from the misfitting pieces that Diagonal celebrates, with Kohei Matsunaga, whose music as NHK yx Koyxen has always managed skirt the edges between what’s considered functional for the dancefloor and totally leftfield, delivering the label its most concentrated album of ‘club music’ yet.

Not Waving – Animals

During a 2015 Juno Plus interview to discuss the demise of his Walls partnership with Sam Willis, Alessio Natalizia let slip that he’d signed a deal to release the next Not Waving album on Powell’s Diagonal label. He promised that it would be “very different” and, more specifically, “very intense”. Those with an intimate knowledge of Natalizia’s work as Not Waving will know that he’s always been capable of moments of blackened intensity and droning noise. Clear industrial influences bubbled up amongst the experimental ambience, heart-felt post-rock textures and twinkling asides that marked out his Voices cassette series and the excellent Human Capabilities album on Emotional Response.

Powell – Club Music Remixes

The UK label Diagonal rounds out a stellar year with remixes from one of its founders, Powell’s Club Music release. Somehow the label has managed to persuade Ancient Methods and Cabaret Voltaire’s Richard H Kirk to rework tracks from the record with predictably impressive results. Now just a solo act, it sounds like Ancient Methods is channeling the spirit and sound of 80s industrial and EBM on his two remixes which seemingly contain source elements of all three tracks from Powell’s original record.
