It’s an unfortunate by-product of their success that four years into its lifespan as a label, L.I.E.S. have become a lazy reference point for the less imaginative corners of the content farm. “Gritty industrial techno or raw house? It sounds like it should be on L.I E.S. mate.” It’s just as personally vexing as people throwing out the word ‘Dilla-esque’ to describe some sweetly soulful MPC beats because hey, everyone loves Dilla, right buddy? Much like last year’s KWC 92 LP or the Unicursal Hexagram set by Jahiliyya Fields, the first album project of 2014 for L.I.E.S. forms another perfect riposte to those who claim the label’s oeuvre can be condensed to just a few ragged stylistic tropes.

In a post-internet age where access to the internet and a Spotify account offer a contemporary variant on the homemade mixtape, officially sanctioned compilations retain an ever more defined and important role for our listening habits. Gunnar Haslam’s existence sprung out of nothingness, which is becoming a common narrative for the ever-growing misfit family of Ron Morelli’s L.I.E.S. label. Emerging with an absence of any biographical information save an obtuse statement on his Facebook page claiming “he came from the border”, there’s not much to go on backstory wise for the anonymous New Yorker. In lieu of any kind of press photo, Haslam seems to prefer a picture of a skeleton holding two wine jugs. Fair enough.
