The new album from Young Echo member Vessel comes to life in the splayed drum hits of “Febrile”, and it instantly calls to mind the way in which Nine Inch Nail’s seminal The Downward Spiral staggers into life with “Mr Self Destruct”, minus self-flagellating groans and grunts from Seb Gainsborough. That is no doubt good news for Gainsborough’s physical and mental wellbeing considering the state Trent Reznor got himself into recording his 1994 opus, and while the ensuing first track proper “Red Sex” is very much its own beast, as an immediate first impression the link lingers.
Josh Hall sits down with Vessel to discuss the intentions and interesting methods behind his new album, the conflicted nature of English national identity and disrupting the norm in clubs.

If the press release for That’s Harakiri is to be believed, then Sd Laika – the alias of Milwaukee-based producer Peter Runge – was on the verge of being one of many producers consigned to the increasing list of bedroom-based one hit wonders, before Tri Angle boss Robin Carolan convinced the producer to deliver a debut album. Responsible for one excellent release on Visionist’s Lost Codes label in 2012, and thus nominally attached to the recent explosion in instrumental grime, the Unknown Vectors EP was nevertheless something of an anomaly in this field, adopting a murky aesthetic more in line with that of Actress than the cleaner lines of contemporaries Visionist, Slackk and Fatima Al Qadiri.
Considering the hype around Joshua Leary has been at a fairly consistent level since uploaded a batch of anonymous tracks to YouTube at the tail end of 2011 under the name Evian Christ, it’s been frustratingly difficult to get a handle on what kind of an artist he actually is. Few would disagree that the level of praise afforded to him in the early stages of his career was probably somewhat out of proportion with the material itself, which, in hindsight, was little more than a slightly different take on the well-worn practice of chopping up acapellas and combining them with some 808 rhythms and soft synths. It’s probably for that reason that Tri Angle elected to release that material as the free Kings and Them mixtape, well aware that they were dealing with a promising yet inexperienced producer catapulted prematurely to the limelight rather than the finished article.
The Milwaukee-based producer will release his debut album in April.
