Continuing his salvo of singles for the ever-strengthening Houndstooth imprint, Call Super’s latest release reveals yet more dimensions to his crafty sound. The notion of craftiness in modern production is one with a select reach, only wielded by those with an innate gift to lift their compositions above the tropes of any given genre to create something ineffably sharp and unique. It’s no surprise then that Call Super has often been associated with Objekt, reaching back to the producer’s first single on Five Easy Pieces that came backed with a remix from the man otherwise known as TJ Hertz. It’s not hard to see the similarities, and Objekt is certainly an artist with a healthy dose of craftiness in his blood.

The record backspins. The MC yells to the crowd, his voice cracking, pleading with them to get off the stage. They’re shaking the platform and the records keep skipping. Snippets of Double 99’s “RIP Groove” echo against breakneck paced cymbal crashes. Pitch shifted vocals from Rochelle Jordan’s “Pressure” obscure the gender of the voice ringing out over the track. “Can I make it better with the lights turned off?” the voice asks. Ringing air horns and gunshots hang heavy in the humid air of the club as a pulse-intensifying breakbeat surges in out of nowhere, convulsing and detonating in a series of violent synaptic explosions.
The position that Fabric occupies allows it the scope to either do a lot of cultural good or to just use another medium to consolidate their name. It would be easy for the London club to keep on churning out their often excellent mix CDs as their only inroad into the field of recorded music. Thankfully, they have decided not to limit themselves to this activity and are also behind the Houndstooth label, which they have wisely allowed Rob Booth to A&R.

Along with the resurgent love of acid house and analogue production, it’s been hard to miss the dirty roll of classic jungle lurking around the edges of more bass-weighted productions of late. Producers such as Tessela have been forthright in their appropriation of amen breaks, snare rushes and icy pads as a means of injecting that unmistakable energy into their productions, while it’s really not that uncommon to hear straight-up house tracks with subtle splashes of the think break in amongst the 4/4 framework.
Paul Woolford’s jungle influenced project becomes the most high profile addition to Houndstooth with an album due later this year
As the Houndstooth label starts to positively hit its stride after the sterling debut from Call Super, it’s interesting to try and ascertain the curatorial slant Rob Booth (of Electronic Explorations fame) is aiming for with the label. There’s a definite sense as this EP from Akkord unfurls that the quest is for the new and unconsidered in electronic music, which is not the easiest of remits to meet in these cross-pollinated over-saturated times.
