There’s not much to report on Bristol’s Rhythmic Theory when it comes to identity politics: Several releases on his/her/their eponymous label showcase spacey, enveloping wormhole techno cuts that will make Pev & Kowton fans perk their ears up, but we get nothing resembling a backstory or biography. Then again, when you’re listening to the latest release on The Kelly Twins helmed Happy Skull label, you get the sense that context might be beside the point. Instead, the emphasis here is purely on the functionality of the tracks: two unexpected brutish surges of corrosive techno that come barrelling out of the darkness to smack the listener right in the cochlea.
After the sterling first release from Kowton and Hyetal’s Systems Of Desire project, Bristol based label Happy Skull kick off round two with a decidedly fresh talent that marks out those behind the label to have a strong conviction in their curatorial tastes. Adjowa already has something of an online presence, with a slickly finished website alluding to a love of all things black and red, in keeping with a boogie theme expressed through an online mix and now creeping through in his debut release.

Considering their output to date, it comes as something of a surprise to find Kowton and Hyetal conjoining for the inaugural release on Happy Skull. The label is one of the freshest ventures to emanate from the wider Idle Hands family, curated by Bristol DJs par excellence The Kelly Twins and featuring two regular fixtures in the shop on either side of the counter.
