Powell’s last record for his own Diagonal Records was called Body Music. It’s a name that sums up the wry sense of humour at the heart of the producer’s creaky take on techno; although his sound is visceral in its own way, it’s less down to the kind of throbbing, gut-punching basslines you’d expect from traditional EBM, and more due to the wire wool scrubbing his scratchy post-punk textures give your ears. For Powell, the notion of “Body Music” was one whose frequent forays into a 150bpm tempo zone were more inclined to invoke a loss of bodily control rather than create a physical sensation internally, positioning him outside of the concurrent wave of producers making far more conventional techno of an industrial influence.
The next Diagonal Records release will come from the label’s founder Powell.

Russell Haswell’s new album for Powell’s Diagonal Records is framed rather amusingly by the label as “Haswell puts a donk on it”. Haswell’s sonic experiments – whether in the live context or on record – are generally the kind of thing seemingly devoted to the sheer physicality of noise and sound, balanced with a more analytical ear. Having said that, it’s an appropriate turn of phrase for an artist whose work also doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously – much like that of Powell himself.

Powell’s label will issue the reformed iconic NYC group’s debut album Ghost Amongst The Crew next month.

Powell’s Diagonal is really hitting its stride. Following two EPs from the man himself, Diagonal was responsible earlier this year for Blood Music’s self-titled EP, and will shortly celebrate the release of a new Prostitutes record. In the middle, though, comes easily the label’s most surprising signing to date. Shit & Shine are best known for their use of multiple drummers and their pitilessly loud live shows. They most frequently operate in the hinterlands of rock music, but on this self-titled EP they have abandoned their distorted excesses and instead honed a combination of satisfyingly skewed disco, chunnering industrialism and, in the record’s high point, a demented reinterpretation of Theo Parrish.
