When Fred Peterkin put out his first album under the FP-Oner guise last year, he told this writer that the next stage of his artistic development would involve some type of live performance, but that it would have to be “unique to my vision and I would have to take it as seriously as my music-making or my DJing.” Given that 6 has appeared less than a year after its predecessor, it seems that making a transition from club DJ to fully-fledged live act has been put on hold for the time being.
Fred P continues his trilogy of albums for Toshiya Kawasaki’s label with the arrival of 6 in May.
Modern Architect is a collection of tracks from Fred Peterkin’s studio that have only previously been aired in his the US producer’s DJ sets. According to a note from the newly formed Energy Of Sound label, this is the first in a series of releases, so it seems that Fred P fans can look forward to more such albums in the future. Modern Architect turned out to Peterkin’s second album of a productive 2015, but stands in stark contrast to his 5 album as FP-Oner on Mule Musiq.

As anyone who has seen Fred P DJ at peak time will attest, the man isn’t afraid to embrace his inner techno demon. It can come as something of a shock to those enchanted by his deeper-than-your-average deep house, but when the man wants to flex some tough rhythmic muscle he can do so with the same assured quality that permeates his production. It’s a pleasure then to catch wind of his self-proclaimed techno side project Anomaly scoring a full 12” release, following a brief appearance on 2011’s C.O.M.E compilation. That track, “Above Below”, features again here on the B2 in recognition of the fact it may have been overlooked before.

Fred P is becoming an ever more prominent force in deep house, widely recognised for his austere approach that shrugs off the automatic tendency towards physicality in dance music, letting it play second fiddle to the more psychologically-focused power that can be summoned from music on a wider scale. There’s a reason that he called his label Soul People Music, and in the trademark pads and chords that have come to define his music, Fred has managed to capture the same uplifting spirit that has embodied black music since the earliest days; an emancipating resistance sound as much about spiritual fulfillment as it is about fighting back.
US producer Fred P will release an album under his Black Jazz Consortium guise, entitled Codes And Metaphors and set for release next month.
