Drone logo

Flexed-out disco muscle, stomping rave and a beautifully designed ode to Eddie Murphy: DJs, producers and label bosses pick their track of 2012

To add some spice – and credibility – to this year’s annual best of round-up at Juno Plus, we enlisted some of our favourite DJs, producers and record label bosses to pick one record that didn’t leave their bag in 2012. We asked the likes of Gerd Janson, Levon Vincent, Veronica Vasicka, Bill Kouligas, Bok Bok, JD Twitch and Ron Morelli to take part, and their selections veered from the rickety techno of Powell to the bass heavy polyrhythms of Soundway Records, Omar S’s Eddie Murphy homage and much more.

Daniel Avery – Need Electric EP review

In a recent interview Dazed Digital published between Kindness front man Adam Bainbridge and the perennially popular Erol Alkan, the two touched on an interesting discussion regarding the current state of remix culture. Bainbridge quite rightly pointed out that remixes were once a “different form of expression of the track” while now content hungry labels and digital agencies treat them as crass marketing tools. This is especially prevalent in the cesspool that is now the “blogosphere” where unworthy producers are commissioned to produce unnecessary remixes just to hammer home the point some insignificant band have some terrible and derivative single out.

Watch: Daniel Avery – Taste

Daniel Avery’s Need Electric EP was released last week on locked groove vinyl via Phantasy Sound and the label has now revealed a rather fitting video for one of the record’s highlights.

The seven plus minutes of sparse rhythms, percolating bass lines and odd vocal embellishments that form “Taste” may well make for one of this year’s weirdest tracks conceived with the dance floor in mind, and the above Daniel Brereton directed video which frames jerkingly shifted shots of models rolling past frosted glass is an appropriate visual accompaniment.

Daniel Avery – Movement review

Cast an eye across the crème de la crème of new producers and DJs straining to poke their heads above the dance music melee that is 2012 and what do you see? It’s certainly a sprawling landscape – and one which appears to be almost drowning in a deluge of new sounds on a daily basis. There’s a rapidly expanding pool of producers, DJs and releases all shouting loudly – and, arguably, without saying much. It’s amid this aural backdrop that Movement, the second EP proper from young(ish) mop haired pup Daniel Avery, lands – and stands out like a refreshingly sore thumb. A surefooted use of analogue tools and heavy injections of machine-funk ensure it gracefully sidesteps much of the competition and finely straddles the tightrope between sounding suitably left and gloriously classic.
