While some of his Jakbeat associates have embraced EBM, new wave and industrial, US producer D’Marc Cantu has kept his focus on classic house sounds. It means that his productions are not as off the wall as last year’s Charles Manier album from Tadd Mullinix or have that unpredictability that characterise Traxx’s DJ sessions. Despite this, Long Weekend navigates a impressive path through the myriad of samey deep house cast offs and single idea jack tracks. It also doesn’t sound too similiar to anything else on Aroy Dee’s label, despite MOS Deep’s catalogue drawing on similar influences.
The Ann Arbor-based producer will release a three-track 12″ on MOS Deep later this month.
The notion that labels no longer act as filters doesn’t hold sway when one considers the M>O>S operation. Set up by Aroy Dee in 2003, its original purpose was to release music by the Dutch producer himself as well as close associates like Delsin boss Marsel (as Peel Seamus) and Jochem ‘Newworldaqurium’ Peteri under his Ross 154 guise. While fads and fashions have come and go during the intervening decade, M>O>S is inadvertently positioned as one of the most relevant labels of the moment.
Last month’s Separate Mind column focused on the enduring influence of a specific location. As this month’s releases show, great electronic music no longer needs to have come from one inspirational home; it merely has to be going in a compelling direction.

Curiously for such a fresh producer, Marco Antonio Spaventi has the air of someone who has been in the game for a long time. His affiliation to Aroy Dee and M>O>S Recordings, not to mention the wider Delsin family, is perfectly in keeping with the sound that he crafts.
