Gesloten Cirkel – Murder Capital 11/12

Russian producer Gesloten Cirkel’s debut album, Submit X, was last year’s most important long player. This is because it was the first album to connect a wide audience to the dark and grimy acid-techno-electro fusion that has been simmering away for over twenty years on labels like Guy Tavares’ Bunker, its sister Panzerkreuz and Murder Capital. Submit X was not by any stretch of the imagination a polished record, but it did distill much of the raw form energy from and provide some focus to the rough, distorted sound of those labels’ catalogues.

Various Artists – Test Pilot Volume 2

After some delays, one of the most anticipated records of 2015 finally drops. It has been well worth the wait. The hype around Test Pilot Volume 2 is in large part due to the inclusion of Tandy Ogmo’s “Everybody”, a track that I-f played during a set on Boiler Room. Revolving around a repetitive vocal sample and an infectious disco loop, the underlying groove is flawed and imperfect, with the percussion breaking down and sounding out of time, almost jarring at one point.

Gesloten Cirkel – Submit X

The expectations surrounding Gesloten Cirkel’s debut album Submit X prove that this artist has defied every accepted rule and approach. For starters, no one really knows who Gesloten Cirkel is apart from the fact that he apparently comes from Russia. Sure, a lot of electronic music producers like to keep their identity a secret for a variety of reasons, but this one has only put out three records in the space of five years and doesn’t have a be-masked anti-image to cling to.

Mark Du Mosch – Bay 25

If you were looking for a dominant narrative for the past twelve months forget micro-genres and focus on location, because 2013 pretty much belonged to the Dutch. Granted, the Netherlands has been punching above its weight in electronic music since the 90s, but in 2013 it was hard to avoid their contribution to underground electronic music. Apart from countless Danny Wolfers projects and Delsin reaching their 100th release, there was a flurry of activity from labels like Crème/R-Zone, Photic Fields, M>O>S, Frustrated Funk, and Rush Hour as well as excellent albums from Versalife and Overdose.

Gesloten Cirkel – Hole

There aren’t many genuine enigmas in dance music these days; Burial has long since been unmasked, the identites of Shifted and Rrose are well known to an eagle-eyed network of techno aficionados, and fresh attempts to create the air of anonymity are generally met with suspicion and derision. Gesloten Cirkel is one of the recent exceptions to the rule; what little information there is on the producer should probably be taken with a pinch of salt, but given the producer’s previous two releases, which have occupied a strange space between electro and house music, and appeared on the Murder Capital label run by I-f and Rotterdam-based Moustache Techno – it seems fairly likely that some connection to The Hague, either in body or spirit, can be safely assumed.

Conforce – 24 review

Conforce’s music remains loyal to techno– tough, driving beats saturated in electronic funk – but also nicely incorporates the dub elements of Basic Channel, Dub Taylor and Rhythm & Sound. Having released records on Rush Hour, Curle and Delsin his sound is synonymous with deep, throbbing bass, sweat-inducing synth work and rounded, warm stabs soaked in reverb – a particular aspect which gives his true form of techno another dimension.
