Ones to Watch (No 5) – Rory Phillips

Rory Phillips cut his DJing teeth as a resident at Erol Alkan’s legendary Trash nights at London’s iconic (but now sadly closed) End nightclub. He’s a man with a keen eye for obscure talent, a crate digger of the highest order. And after some sterling remix work for the likes of the Units, Yacht and Telepathe, he’s now released his first solo tune, “Solar Breakfast” – available now at Juno Download. The telephone-wielding DJ spoke to Juno Plus about his first solo productions, Scrabble and learning to love the cowbell.

Ones to Watch (No 4) – Sidwho?

Sidwho? – aka Surahn Singh Sidhu – hails from Adelaide, South Australia. He’s already been championed by disco tastemaker Tim Sweeney, and has seen his work remixed by DFA’s Jamie Paton (of Cage & Aviary) and the Juan Maclean. He is also part of the Swiss, a 3-piece live disco act signed to Modular, and recently became part of the Empire of the Sun’s live show. With so much on the go, people won’t be asking “Sidwho?” for much longer.

Ryan Grieve and Leo Thomson – aka Canyons – have their fingers in many musical pies. They also run their own independent label Hole In The Sky, and are working on a live show that is due to hit the road in the new year. They took some time out from a hectic schedule to speak to Juno Plus about New York boat parties, DJing in dive bars and collaborating with Nicholas Cage.

Ones to Watch (No 1): Clap Rules

Clap Rules

Ones to Watch is a series in which Juno Plus picks out talent from around the globe and chats to them about their influences, ambitions and hiccups on the road to stardom. First up is Clap Rules, an Italian three-piece whose unique form of experimental disco saw them picked up by cult UK label Tiny Sticks. The band consists of sound engineer & multimedia artist Andrea Gabriele, classically trained musician Max Leggieri and Fabrizio Mammarella, who first made his name as Telespazio with releases on Bear Funk and Super Soul. Fabrizio spoke to Juno Plus editor Aaron Coultate.
