Juju & Jordash return to Downbeat

The Spanish deep house bastion presents two live recordings from the dynamic duo.

While its release schedule has been fairly intermittent over the years, Downbeat has managed to carve out a respectable identity amongst European house labels through the sheer quality of output. Run by Alfonso Pomeda, Jose Rico and Urtzi from Madrid, Downbeat has made a fine art of balancing its own core artists with some impressive guests, from Specter and Mike Huckaby through to Marcellus Pittman and Ron Trent. The Downbeat Black Label has existed as an occasional diversion from the main operation, featuring Vakula as well as Juju & Jordash, who first appeared on Downbeat’s second release back in 2009. Nothing has been heard from Juju & Jordash collectively since last year’s Down To The Roach EP for Dekmantel, but there has been plenty of activity from the latter on his own with excellent Jordan GCZ singles on Off Minor and No ‘Labe’l in recent times.

Now Downbeat present a release that draws on a live set Juju & Jordash performed last December in Madrid, as part of a Downbeat label night. Each side of the record dips into a different section from the set, spanning the usual array of expressive, unpredictable and overall nimble hardware tinkerings that the duo from the Netherlands are known for. At times the sound takes on a distinctly broken, UK stance, and elsewhere it’s a raw acidic affair, but it’s certainly never dull. There are some fairly sizable clips of the release available to stream in the SoundCloud player below, while the record itself should be out later this month.

Meanwhile Downbeat made another move recently with the announcement of a record from Son Dexter, a Canadian artist previously featured on Larry Heard’s Alleviated label some fifteen years ago. The breezy, pop-inflected sounds of Son Dexter are also due to appear at the end of the month on the Special Edition tributary of Downbeat the and you can preview it here.
