Versatile Records announce details of 20th Anniversary compilation
I:Cube and label head Gilb’r handpick 25 tracks for the upcoming 2CD compilation celebrating the Paris label’s landmark.
The 20th annivesary celebrations for Gilb’r’s Versatile label began in earnest earlier this year with a fresh 12″ pairing up Daft Punk’s remix of I:Cube’s “Disco Cubizm” with an unreleased DJ Gregory take on Gilb’r side project Cheek. Given that Disco Cubizm was the record that launched Versatile back in 1996, this felt like a wholly appropriate way to mark the anniversary. Since then, Versatile have dug out further classics from I:Cube and Chateau Flight for this 12″ series in amdist regular label output with the promise a more substantial compilation celebrating their landmark was on the way. As the eagle-eyed Versatile enthusiasts at RA note, the label have now revealed full details of what to expect.
Due out before the end of the month, 1996 – 2016 – Versatile Records 20 Years has been compiled by both Gilb’r and label icon I:Cube with the latter handpicking a selection of tracks that helped define the first decade and the former overseeing a selection of more recent cuts. You may well note the absence of Maurice Fulton’s classic remix of Chateau Flight cut “Vacuum Jackers” and this is intentional as I:Cube “deliberately excluded certain tracks.” As a result you get a deeper survey of everything Versatile has touched on in this two-decade period with Gilb’r modestly stating his selections “try to show where we are today, 20 years after the start of this adventure. It is safe to say that no one is more surprised than me, that we are still going strong.”
Versatile will release 1996 – 2016 – Versatile Records 20 Years by Various Artists on May 27.
