ESP Institute gets highly by Powder

ESP-header

Loverfingers’ label introduces Japanese entity Powder with a five-track release.

As we edge into the final quarter of 2015, ESP Institute’s discography for this calendar year is starting to look quite impressive. Before the release of last week’s Karamika LP, Nenad Marković’s numerical 33.10.3402 project added two more episodes to his Mecanica series of EPs, and Berlin-based producer Moscoman made the jump from I’m A Cliché to ESP Institute after the label welcomed in Mark E with the two-track Emergency 12″. The label now add to their marching year by revealing a five-track number is on the way from a new name called Powder who graces the label by supplying Andrew Hogge’s operation with a record called Highly following her debut on Born Free.

Details are scarce on who is exactly behind the alias (who also DJs as DJ Offer) however a press release, which reads as if inspired by a Haruki Murakami novel, explains somewhat whimsically that the music comes from a young Japanese producer based in Tokyo seeking escape from “a banal world of blank stares, uniforms, data entry and soliciting phone calls.” Available to preview below, Powder’s music does indeed feel laced with Japanese motifs, alongside fusions on machine funk, deeper strands of house and techno that’s mixed with a lo-fi, neon and new age feel.

ESP Institute will release Highly by Powder on October 31.
