WéMè to release album from Black Narcissus

The Rephlex-affiliated artist will release Varla in May through the Brussels-based label.

Fans of the Signals imprint will recognise the clandestine electro of Black Narcissus, with the project debuting on the North East label last year with the excellent Black Narcissus X mini album. Whilst the identity of Black Narcissus was kept a secret at the time beyond a hint it was the work of a sometime Rephlex artist, it has subsequently been revealed to be the work of Jodey Kendrick, whose electro-focused music has appeared under various guises on the label founded by Richard D. James, and on the affiliated Electric Dance Music.

This makes him a perfect candidate for the WéMè label, which has previously put out material from fellow Rephlex artists Cylob and Global Goon, as well as numerous records from DJ Stingray. Set for release in May, Varla is Kendrick’s debut album under the Black Narcissus guise and as the artwork suggests it takes its name from the lead character of Russ Meyer’s ’60s exploitation flick Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. Some eleven tracks deep, Varla apparently finds Kendrick indulging in some pure electro in the vein of godfathers Drexciya. WéMè Records will release Varla by Black Narcissus on May 5.
