Win: Skint 15 compilation signed by label legends

Iconic Brighton based imprint Skint earns a round of heartfelt round of applause from Juno Plus for making it to the ripe old age of 15, and to celebrate we’ve got a copy of their new compilation – signed by Fatboy Slim, X-Press 2, Tim Deluxe, Kidda and Midfield General – to give away.

Skint burst onto the scene in the mid-nineties with a clutch of releases from the aforementioned artists plus the likes of Hardknox, Lo-Fi’s and Freq Nasty, and soon became synonymous with the Big Beat sound. But as that scene lost its momentum, Skint proved itself to be a diverse, forward thinking imprint, signing a wide range of artists including Goose,  Ralfe Band and Noisia alongside big names a la Dave Clarke, Tomas Anderson and Tim Deluxe.

The press release that accompanies Skint 15 says it is “not a definitive collection, but a 3 CD collection of 45 tracks that reflect the musical variation and pioneering spirit of the label”. You can have a sneak peak at the selected tracks via the Juno Download player below. All you have to do to enter the competition is: type the name of your favourite ever Skint record in the comments section below. The winner will be notified via email on Friday, October 15.

Meanwhile we fired a few questions off to Skint and Loaded founders JC Reid and Tim Jeffery this week to reflect on a decade and a half in the biz, and discover how they almost signed The Streets…

Did you ever expect to make it to 15 years?

Never, we just took it day to day. It didn’t help that we spent most of the day in the office playing Doom, or maybe in retrospect it did.

What are your three favourite releases on your label and why?

While it’s always difficult to choose favourite releases on your own label, as it’s a bit like asking someone to choose their favourite child, three that stand out are: “Santa Cruz” by Fatboy Slim, because it was the one that started it all off, although we were a bit disappointed that it only sold 1500 copies when it first came out. Also X Press 2’s “Lazy” because it won an Ivor Novello award and JFB’s mix of “Right Here, Right Now” because it’s our latest one.

Has it been a challenge to stay relevant as trends and genres change?

We just put out tracks that we like and hope for the best.

Who is one artist you wished you signed for the label?

The Streets, apparently he came in and talked to us but no one can remember, it was in the height of the madness and we can’t really remember a whole lot to be honest.

Can you see a big beat revival on the cards?

We’re always waiting for the Big Beat bus to come round again.

What have you got coming up release wise?

We’ve got an amazing collaboration between X-Press 2 and Tim Deluxe “Tone Head Chemistry / Siren Track”, JFB mix of “Right Here, Right Now”, Jayou with “Crack Hands”, Mirrors’ new single “Hide and Seek” as well as our Skint 15 compilation.

Update: This competition is now closed and a winner has been selected. Thanks to all those who entered!
