Listen to M//R throw down Dread Nox
Billy Werner summons up jungle daemons on his new release for L.I.E.S.
L.I.E.S. has never been shy on matters of productivity. In six years of operation there are more than 100 different releases on the New York-born label, and this year alone its been hard to keep up with the relentless pace of the release schedule. We count some 21 albums and EPs already in 2016, from artists such as 33.10.3402, NHK yx Koyxen, Greg Beato, Silent Servant and Gunnar Haslam. August will see another clutch of L.I.E.S. gripppers surface and among them is a second M//R release on the label from Billy Werner. The US producer debuted on L.I.E.S. last year with the fine swirl of techno and electro that was the Let That Shit Breathe 12”, having previously been spotted on Details Sound and Great Circles.
Werner’s roots in hardcore bands have given way to hardware explorations, having also turned out smoother deep house business for Kinfolk in the past. However, there’s nothing smooth about the lead track from his M//R new release on L.I.E.S., which instead tackles that much loved source of instant rave energy, the jungle break. Much like Millie & Andrea or Tessela, Werner has done a magnificent job of wielding crunchy drum samples with dexterity and welding them onto techno structures in a manner that demands attention. Considering how much we’ve heard of amens and the like being splattered over tough techno, it’s testament to Werner’s studio knack that this is a track so badass, it’s worthy of a dedicated post. Listen to “Dread Nox” in full below, and keep your eyes peeled for a three-track EP set to land at the end of this month.
