DDS announces new Shinichi Atobe album
The elusive Japanese producer is back on Demdike Stare’s label with World.
Back in late-October 2014, Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty from Demdike Stare sprung a most welcome surprise with the arrival of a debut album from Japanese artist Shinichi Atobe on their DDS label. Prior to Butterfly Effect, Atobe’s sole release was the highly sought-after Ship-Scope 12″ for Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald’s iconic Chain Reaction label back in 2001. Unperturbed by his elusive nature, Canty and Whittaker seemingly tracked down Atobe in his native Japan and coaxed an album’s worth of new and archival material out of him for Butterfly Effect which ranked highly at number four in our end of year LP list in 2014.
Last year saw DDS license the Ship-Scope 12″ for reissue on their label and now excitingly Canty and Whittaker have tapped Atobe for a further album of material. Some six tracks long, World takes on a similar broad format to Butterfly Effect in that it is made up of music Atobe recorded “some time in the last 20 years.” Previews over at Boomkat suggest this new Atobe dispatch continues the artist’s penchant for scratchy, minimalist productions with almost insectile quality to them.
DDS will release World by Shiniche Atobe on June 24.
