400ppm returns to Avian

Shawn O’Sullivan’s production alias makes its way back to Shifted’s label.

It was in 2013 that Shawn O’Sullivan’s 400ppm alias surfaced on Avian with the six-track Non Nocere EP, described by Scott Wilson as “industrial techno of a sort, but one which literally seems to reference the movements of the factory rather than just the industrial genre.” Until news surfaced on RA that Shifted’s Avain label are to put out more 400ppm sounds, it wouldn’t have been wrong to assume it was a one-off project for the New Yorker. It’s one of several aliases O’Sullivan works under, with side-projects like Vapauteen releasing two records on L.I.E.S., while other collaborations with Beau Wanzer as Civil Duty and Further Reductions with Katie O’Sullivan have appeared respectively on Anthony’s Parasole’s The Corner label and Veronica Vasicka’s Cititrax.

Set for a release next year, the return of 400ppm lands as a four-track EP called Just-In-Time, with a press release from Avian suggesting “subtle nods to IDM” and references to O’Sullivans work in the aforementioned Further Reductions remain in the “form of spacious verb and fluid atmospherics.” By its own standards, Avian’s output in 2015 has slowed compared to the past with the label putting out the three records this year, from Swedes Simon Haydo and Pedder Mannerfelt as well as Chicago artist Litüus. Avian will release Just-In-Time by 400ppm on January 25.
