Adam Oko feasts on a Diet of Germs

The debut EP from the London-based artist is set to land on Astro:Dynamics next month.

Considering how much material they put out in 2014, this year has been a more measured one for Astro:Dynamics. The amorphous multi-format label has tended to up its output year on year since starting out in 2010, but since branching out to vinyl releases from their more tape-centric origins the releases have been fewer, but certainly no less worthy. The opening gambit of De/Re-constructions by BNJMN and Best Available Technology made a sizable impact at the start of the year, prompting a full-length interview from Juno Plus, while BAT’s older archive material got a second look on the label by way of the Excavated Tapes 1992-1999, Vol. 2 in the summer. For their third and final release of the year, Astro:Dynamics have chosen to shine the spotlight on a new talent in the field of production, but one who fits right in with the exploratory nature of the label’s past offerings.

Adam Oko has been found moonlighting on NTS Radio in the past while building up a reputation as a serious collector of 80s Japanese electronic music, but the artistic statement represented on Diet Of Germs comes from an altogether less specified geographical place. Rich harmonic compositional elements meet with sharply defined rhythm sections in arrangements that play out more like a band than a bank of machines, rounding out four original tracks in a particularly ear-snagging style. Ensuring that followers of the label don’t forget him, Kevin ‘BAT’ Palmer is back once more with an appropriately dishevelled remix of “Suketo” that provides a calming counterpoint to the ebullient energy of Oko’s own versions.

Astro:Dynamics will release Diet Of Germs by Adam Oko on December 4.
