Basic Soul Unit gets Under The Same Sky

Stuart Li will release his second album on Dekmantel in October.

After having a relatively quiet 2014, Toronto-based producer Stuart Li has been more active in 2015 what with a single on Dolly, a choice remix on Don’t Be Afraid and two various artist releases on his own Lab.our label. Li had been somewhat omnipresent in 2013 as the 12”s flew out on Midnight Shift, Nonplus and Still Music, the latter of which also released his 2012 debut album Motional Response. These missives represent the tip of a sturdy iceberg of material from a producer who has made the Basic Soul Unit moniker synonymous with loud, bumping outboard house music; an aesthetic that suits the surroundings of Dutch powerhouse Dekmantel down to the ground.

It’s been a gut-busting year for the label arm of the Dekmantel empire, with myriad releases flying out from the hyped Fatima Yamaha reissue to singles from Juju & Jordash, Palms Trax, Entro Senestre and a series in conjunction with clothing label PATTA. Under The Same Sky is the second album from Li, who makes his Dekmantel debut with this release. The ten tracks find the artist continuing to draw on a myriad of influences while retaining a tight focus over his overall sound. As the label put it, on the LP “Li’s offset and grubby bruk drums are a constant nod to the dance floor, while his melodies lean towards an unparalleled industrial edged emotion.”

Dekmantel will release Under The Same Sky by Basic Soul Unit on October 16.
