Beats In Space to release Palmbomen II album

palmbomen-II-590
The Dutch producer will release an album of electronic music inspired by The X-Files.

The project of Netherlands-born, Los Angeles-based artist Kai Hugo, Palmbomen is a collaborative effort whose lo-fi pop music has found their way onto labels like Kitsune and NON, the latter of which released the Night Flight Europa album last year. While the Palmbomen project is aimed at live instrumentation, Hugo also operates as Palmbomen II, a solo concern utilising classic drum machines and hardware that has caught the attention of Beats In Space boss Tim Sweeney, who invited Hugo to play at some of his recent BiS 15th anniversary parties under the Palmbomen II alias.

As well as supporting Sweeney’s recent birthday celebrations, Hugo will release a self-titled album as Palmbomen II on Sweeney’s Beats In Space label next year. Recorded across a summer in his mother’s attic using equipment including an Oberheim DX, Arp 2600 and Roland TR-909, the album is also said in a press release from the label to be partially inspired by “binge-watching” ’90s classic The X-Files. If that’s enough to get you as intrigued as we are, a preview can we heard in the video below – fans of Swedish artist 1991 should feel right at home with both his visual and sonic aesthetic.

Beats In Space will release Palmbomen II on March 3, 2015.
