Karen Gwyer remixes Sculpture’s “Hackle Scam Populator”

Listen to the Opal Tapes and No Pain In Pop artist’s rework of the audiovisual duo.

Earlier this month, Software released Membrane Pop, the latest album from Sculpture, the audiovisual duo of Dan Hayhurst and Reuben Sutherland whose blend of live-sampled tape loops and kaleidoscopic visuals make them one of the most unique live electronic acts currently operating. With a colourful sound inspired by Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kinsgley, comprised of fluidic textures that flow around strange rhythms and ghostly samples, it makes perfect sense for the duo to be remixed by Karen Gwyer, whose Needs Continuum album on No Pain In Pop last year explored a similar set of “labyrinthine plasmic pulsations”.

Available to stream below, Gwyer’s take on Membrane Pop track “Hackle Scam Populator” ties snatches of looped melody from the original around rattling breakbeats which eventually crumble into a trance-like confusion of analogue blips and swelling pads.
