Descend into the “Imperial Sewers” with M.E.S.H.

Following releases from more established names like Bass Clef, Beneath and Valerio Tricoli, Berlin-based producer M.E.S.H. may be one of the lesser known artists to be releasing a record on PAN this year, but he’s certainly no less interesting. Together with like-minded residents Lotic and KABLAM, M.E.S.H. is a resident of Berlin’s Janus parties, a night which attempts to bring together the more radical strains of contemporary club music together into a uniquely experimental whole. Guest bookings have included Kode9, Jam City and Teengirl Fantasy among others – this recent interview from the collective with 032c and mix from Lotic should provide excellent context.

The Scythians EP will be the third release from M.E.S.H. following the Share The Blame EP released on Dyssembler in 2012,and a recent set of Variations of Renaissance Man tracks on Black Ocean, and sees him take his mutant combination of grime, R&B and contemporary hip hop production into more experimental territory. Streaming below, “Imperial Sewers” sets the tone for the forthcoming five track release; featuring the kind of glassy synth textures and dramatic bass which mark out much of Fatima Al Qadiri’s grime-influenced productions, the more commercial reference points in M.E.S.H.’s sound add a pleasingly unexpected dimension.
