Talker and Autumns debut on Downwards
The alternative sounds of Ulster and Chicago form the basis of the next two releases from Downwards.
The curatorial renaissance apparent in Downwards throughout their 20th anniversary year was one of 2013’s defining narratives for us at Juno Plus, as the label honed in on a selection of producers and musicians nestled in the intersection between noise, techno and post punk with engaging results. Having issued long players from DVA DAMAS and Samuel Kerridge, as well as the celebratory Halha compilation, it’s no surprise that the past few months have seen downtime for Downwards, with Karl O’Connor and Juan Mendez seemingly focusing attentions on the Jealous God label.
News has however arrived of two releases forthcoming in the near future on Downwards, with the first a full label debut for Chicago duo Talker. Formed of long term Chicago fixtures Jonathon ‘Stave’ Krohn and Karl Meier, Talker were one of the new names introduced on the aforementioned Halha compilation, and the forthcoming three-track 12″ for Downwards represents the first official release from the pair. Complementing this, at the end of the month Downwards will welcome Derry-based act Autumn into the fold with the six-track Mini LP of grotty DIY bedroomgaze that’s described quite aptly by the label as “Jesus and Mary Chain meets Joe Meek and Ride head on!” Interested parties can preview both releases below.
Downwards will release DN060 by Talker on March 20 with the Mini LP from Autumns due to arrive on March 31.
