Hivern Discs introduce Michael & Mattis
The duo will debut on the Barcelona-based label next month with Hoes Before Bros.
Since the release of his debut album ƒIN last year, John Talabot’s profile has been on the up and up, with the retiring DJ and producer having just issued his fine induction into the long running DJ Kicks series. Throughout this period, his label Hivern Discs have carefully developed and expanded their roster of artists, with releases from Mistakes Are OK, Kresy and Dublin act New Jackson demonstrating that the label are quite willing to operate as a platform for unfamiliar artists to gain further exposure.
This year Hivern’s activities have been largely dominated by their ongoing dalliance with Young Turks, manifesting in both Talabot and Pional releasing music through the West London label, as well as jointly releasing a record of remixes of The xx from various Hivern artists. In addition, the Barcelona-based label has quietly put out the aforementioned New Jackson record, enlisted Legowelt and Heinrich Muller to remix Spanish pair Fasenuova and dropped a limited one-sided 12″ that’s currently commanding some ridiculous Discogs prices.
Hiven have now announced the news that their final release of the year comes from another unknown quantity in Michael & Mattis. Due out in early December, the Hoes Before Bros 12″ marks the first physical release from New Yorker Michael and his Norwegian collaborator Mattis, and contains three original productions that should nestle snugly into the Hivern canon on the basis of the label’s description of their sound as “bold grooves and smooth vibes produced with tape warmth and a singular pop appeal”.
Hivern’s fine ear for remix commissions is demonstrated once more with Aniara pair Genius Of Time on board to remix the title track – the original of which is available to listen on the below video. Barcelona design studio Córdova-Canillas have been commissioned to provide the artwork.
Hivern Discs will release Hoes Before Bros by Michael & Mattis in 12″ format on December 9 with the digital edition to follow two weeks later.
