Lone returns to R&S with Airglow Fires
Details of a new R&S single from UK producer Lone have emerged.
The first material to emerge from the Nottingham-based Matt Cutler since last year’s fluorescent Galaxy Garden album will be a two track single entitled Airglow Fires for R&S, a label which Cutler has had strong ties with since releasing the six-track Echolocations EP in 2011. Since emerging on Dealmaker Records in 2008, Cutler’s style has developed from a style of instrumental hip hop with a considerable debt to Boards of Canada and early Warp material, to an equally colourful, modern take on classic rave music that has also graced Actress’ Werkdiscs imprint.
Both tracks see Cutler on considerably less ravey form than the sometimes exhausting Galaxy Garden; although still imbued with his trademark vibrancy, both tracks take a direction that feels considerably more influenced by deep house. Softer Detroit vibes mixed with a set of Plaid-like rhythms set to a house tempo mark out the title track, while the dusty, looping chords, synthesised pan pipes and swung kicks of “Begin to Begin” wouldn’t sound out of place on Amsterdam’s Dekmantel imprint.
R&S will release Airglow Fires by Lone on July 7.
