Hyperdub give away The Spaceape’s Xorcism EP
Hyperdub are giving away The Spaceape’s Xorcism, a deeply personal seven track EP centred around the producer’s ongoing battle with cancer.
The Spaceape – real name Stephen Samuel Gordon – has been suffering Neurolymphamatosis for the past three years, and a press release distributed today revealed that Xorcism is based around the producer coming to terms with the illness. The EP is being given away because it’s built from samples of voodoo music and therefore “unsellable”.
The tracks featured on Xorcism are essentially a series of vignettes, each clocking in at under three minutes. Track titles like “Your Angel Has Come “, “He Gave His Body Over To Science” and “Up In Flames” reflect the gravity of the themes explored on the release; sonically it’s heavily influenced by Haitian music, with rhythmically complex percussive elements buried beneath The Spaceape’s typically poetic lyrical flow.
The aforementioned press release also reveals that Gordon’s condition also heavily influenced his 2011 Black Sun collaboration with Kode9, and suggests relistening to tracks such as “Black Smoke”, “Neon Red Sign” and “The Cure” to “understand the context to this new batch of solo material”. Hyperdub have also included a list of the various samples used on the EP – see below – which makes for essential reading for inquisitive minds.
