DRC announce remix competition and pop-up event in London
DRC Music will mark the release of Kinshasa One Two – an album project which saw a group of producers selected by Damon Albarn collaborate with more than 50 Congolese musicians – with a pop-up event taking place in London today (November 7).
Pop Up Congo will take place at the London College of Communication, with film, photography and music from the DRC as well as DJ sets from Actress (whom we spoke to at length about the DRC project) and Rodaidh McDonald. The event will run from 4.30-9pm; entry is free and you can find you way there by consulting this map.
Kinshasa One Two was recorded in Kinshasa, Congo, over a five day period in July this year and is officially released today via venerable UK label Warp (check out the soundclips below). The DRC ensemble worked with more than 50 local musicians, including Jupiter and the Okwess International, Bokatola System and Nelly Liyemge. The international contingent included XL boss Richard Russell, T-E-E-D (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs), Dan The Automator and the aforementioned Actress. All proceeds from the album go to Oxfam.
Meanwhile Warp and Soundcloud have also launched a remix competition for DRC track “Hallo” – more on that here.
