Featured DJ Chart: Reggie Dokes (January 2010)

Detroit producer Reggie Dokes puts together his hottest tracks of January in our first featured chart for 2010. In what is arguably the most varied Juno Plus chart so far, Reggie takes us on a fascinating stroll through his world of music, with some classic John Coltrane jazz nestled alongside Jus Ed’s stripped down house and the latest R&B club anthems.

1. Abyee/Jus Ed – Underworld EP (Underground Quality)

“I like the overall vibe of this EP, however “Underworld” is my favourite. This is a very good track to play early in a DJ set. When you put Aybee and Jus Ed together, it can only be magic!”

2. I:Cube – Falling (Versatile)

“I:Cube has been one of my favorite producers for a very long time. He always brings an interesting vibe that can be emotional, deep and many times quite funky. I would have to say that my number one track on this EP is “Falling” – it certainly gives off this old disco/dance vibe.”

3. John Coltrane – Ole (Impulse)

“The US label Impulse puts it down with one of the jazz greats John Coltrane. After a late night in the studio, or for some serious inspiration, you cannot go wrong with jazz at its finest. The standout track has to be “Ole”. I love the piano work and the upright bass player is killing it man!”

4. Various – Pure Urban Essentials 2010 (Rhino)

“OK, let’s mix it up with some R&B and pop! Since I am producing R&B and pop now, I have to find inspiration from who is hot. The first track by Jason Derulo is one of my favorites. Most importantly, it is produced by one of the hottest producers out there – J.R. Rotem. Another highlight here for me has to be that new joint by Pitbull – a true club banger.”

5. Marcellus Pittman – Erase The Pain (Fit Sound)

“Marcellus Pittman is by far one of the most underrated and overlooked producers hailing from my hometown Detroit. He gets down deep and dirty with this EP. “Erase the Pain” is a dancefloor kicker for me, and so is “Illa 5 Ela.” This track is very downtempo, but for some reason puts me in the mindset of some earlier J Dilla stuff. Damn that’s hot!”
