Premiere – Craig Charles gets busy on funk re-edit ‘Rok On’
First instalment of ‘Undercover Cool’ series for Owl Records incoming
If Britain ever gets round to appointing an international ambassador for all things funk and soul, there could only ever be one candidate in the running.
Craig Charles’ commitment to the cause is undisputed. His BBC 6Music session is an institution, so much so that BBC Radio 2 regularly likes to get a piece of the action from him too. But it doesn’t stop there.
When he’s not treating the airwaves to the latest and great in all things funk and soul, he can usually be found in some far flung corner of the nation either behind the decks or curating exceptional shindigs from clubs to festival stages. Charles is also an accomplished musician himself, with skills on guitar and piano and a history of bands with great names like Sons of Gordon Gekko and Craig Charles and the Beat Burglers behind him. In 2009 , he formed the Fantasy Funk Band with various top musicians of the genre and has played Glastonbury, Proms In The Park and many, many other esteemed venues since.
So we probably shouldn’t be surprised to discover that he’s now got his razor blade out and got to work on a pair of sizzling edits for Owl Records under the ‘Undercover Cool 1’ banner. They’ve afforded Juno Daily the privilege of premiering one of that pair – the slow motion groove of ‘Rok On’ complete with frisky bass, decadent vocals and cheeky brass.
