Brixton Academy licence suspension – doubt surrounds gigs from Orbital, 2 Many Djs and many more

Venue took decision to close ahead of today’s council meeting

London’s Brixton Academy has had its licence suspended for a further three months, following two deaths and chaotic scenes at the venue at a show by Afrobeats singer Asake in December.

The iconic South London venue had already preemptively announced it would voluentarily close its doors for three months ahead of a scheduled meeting of Lambeth Council today, but the council confirmed that its licence would remain suspended too.

One show, by the band Wallows, has been moved to Hammersmith Apollo on the same date (January 18) but new venues will need to be found for a huge slew of gigs including 2ManyDjS, Viagra Boys, Orbital (pictured), Royksopp, Ezra Collective, Dry Cleaning, Pendulum, Father John Misty, Suede, Fatboy Slim and girl in red.

A spokesperson for owners AMG said that the company “recognises the gravity of the events which occurred on the night of 15 Dec 2022 and expresses its sincere condolences to the families of those who died during the tragic incident and its genuine concerns for anyone affected by it.

“The licence holder is committed to understanding what happened”, they said, and is “co-operating with the various investigations that are under way including providing full cooperation to the police in the conduct of their inquiries”.
