Matter forced to close?
Rumours abound that London’s Matter nightclub is on the verge of closure, with the venue calling off all upcoming gigs.
Yesterday, internet message boards were awash with gossip about the possible closure. Many DJs and promoters who had been told of gig cancellations went online with the news. Some rumours suggested the club would only close for the summer.
Event Magazine published a story yesterday pointing to a notice in the club’s accounts. It read: “The ‘first gazette’ notice, posted on 2 February 2010 said that the firm which runs the venue, Matter London Ltd, would be wound up ‘unless cause is shown to the contrary’ within three months.”
The 2,600 capacity venue opened in September 2008, a second project for Fabric founders Cameron Leslie and Keith Reilly. In many ways the timing could not have been worse, with recession hitting the UK economy hard shortly after the club opened its doors.
The venue is home to three bimonthly residencies, Hospitality (Hospital Records), RAMatter (Ram Records) and FWD>>/Rinse (Rinse FM).
An official announcement is expected soon from the club’s management. More news to follow as it comes to hand.
