Featured DJ Chart: Session Victim

Take a walk along the hazy line between disco and house, and chances are you’ll find Berlin based duo Session Victim – aka Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling – hovering around. The pair have released a slew of fine releases since 2007, most recently the superb Left The Building EP on Freerange sub label Delusions of Grandeur. So what lies in the record bag of a production team possessing such excellent taste? We spoke to Hauke about what’s been floating his musical boat in April.

1. Matthias Reiling – Das Gespenst von Altona (Giegling)

“Giegling is a label run by guys with the right attitude towards music. They offered my highly talented production partner Matthias Reiling the perfect home for his music. Irresistible beats, artful sampling and the right amount of dirt!”

2. KZRC feat Kemi – Feeding (Andres remix) (NDATL Muzik)

“I’m a huge fan of Kai Alce’s productions, also check out his records on Real Soon. Andres delivers a killer remix with just the right pace and groove. I play the instrumental most.”

3. Omar S – 002 (FXHE)

“I play his version of “Set It Out”. The raw drums fit the cheesy vocal prefectly. It gets my girlfriend on the dancefloor every time!”

4. Various – Searching For Soul: Rare & Classic Soul, Funk & Jazz From Michigan, 1968-1980 (Luv N’Haight)

“I admire these labels gathering hard to find gems. I´m not an hardcore collector and don’t mind buying reissues, especially because many of the original 45″s are probably unaffordable. My current favorite on this is Robert Jay “Alcohol (pt 1)”. With Session Victim we draw our ideas (and samples) from stuff like this.”

5. DJ Sneak/BT/Secret Ingredients/I:Cube/Ian Pooley – Back In The Box Sampler 01 (NRK Sound Division)

“NRK is doing a great and essential job re-releasing classics with their back in the box series. I play theIan Pooley track, sort of my prime time sound right now. On the original 12” the B2 features an equally great track called “All Nite”.”

6. Andres – II (Mahogani)

“I paid a lot of money for his first album and it was worth every penny. I love his hip-hop influenced approach to house. Everything is raw and he can do the magic with samples.”

7. Four Tet – Sing (12″) (Domino)

“I bought this for the Floating Points remix. He is obviously on fire, and I just had the chance to hear him DJ in Berlin and he laid down a killer set. No laptop bullshit – I was very happy to see that!”

8. Super Value – Super Value Special Edits 5 (Super Value)

“These guys do it well, editing old stuff with the right amount of respect and adding the extra kick you want on the floor. Could pick nearly every one of the series, but #5 A-1 is a standout 12″ for me. Also, check out also their stuff as LTJ Experience.”

9. Session Victim/Quarion – Treats Vol 2 (Retreat)

“”Pepper Candy” is further proof of Quarion’s outstanding production skills. I’m really glad to be running a label with such a great musician. Check his latest hip-hop production too.”

10. Session Victim – Left The Building (Delusions of Grandeur)

“I’m happy with every Session Victim record, but I think this one of our strongest 12”. A1 and B1 are for the dancefloor, less compromising than usual. B2 “even (dub)” was created in an extremely smoked out and focused session. It got a bit overlooked but is one of SVM’s best for me.”
