The Rah Band on ‘Messages From The Stars’ – “You couldn’t make it up!”

Rah Rah Rah!

Visionary pop producer Richard Anthony Hewson aka The Rah Band has told Juno Daily he had no idea his ‘Messages From The Stars’ track would become a hit some 40 years on from its release.

Originally released in 1983, the track emerged as a modest club hit, peaking at #42 on the UK charts. Four decades later, the song has been rediscovered and revered as a cult classic, and has just been reissued via Rush Hour Records.

The track was picked up in 2022 by Horse Meat Disco for their Back To Mine mix session and then soon became a massive Tik-Tok sensation in sped up form. It’s now clocked up over 108 million plays on Spotify in its original form, with an additional 41 million plays in its sped up version.

“When I made ‘Messages from the Stars’ back in 1983 in my little bedroom studio,” he told us, “using only the very limited equipment and an eight track recording machine I had at the time, I had no idea that it would be a big hit over 40 years later, and in the same original mixes as released then! You couldn’t make it up!'”

Brazilian producer has also Mochakk released a shimmering house version called ‘From The Stars’ on Ninja Tune.

The Rah Band’s Mystery album, also 40 years old and containing his ‘Clouds Across The Moon’ hit, is set for a reissue on vinyl, dropping on April 25.

Hewson is also heading out for Rah Band shows at Manchester Band On The Wall (May 9) and London Metronome (23), followed by a show at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall on November 8.
