Premiere – Berlin’s Dr Sud serves up some ‘Breakfast Sun’
Just what the Dr ordered

Berlin-raised Italian producer Dr Sud aka Gregorio Marigliano is preparing to drop a bumper package of jazz-inflected deep house grooves from himself and a host of remixers.
The ‘Point Of View #4’ EP, expected out on July 15, sees the good Dr dropping two originals – ‘Breakfast Sun’ and ‘Desert Wind’ – and inviting Turbojazz & Broke One, Gary Superfly and Reekee in on remix duties.
He told us: “A lot of the Inspiration behind the EP lies behind deep research of harmony, chord types and voicing, and how to integrate it with my already existent drum programming and percussion knowledge. I played drums early as a kid so that comes effortlessly by now, but it’s only up on recently that I’ve started to learn about piano and harmony. Thanks to the knowledge and guidance passed by my teacher Nelson of the East I’ve been able to expand my musical language and create something more complete on both ends of the musical spectrum.
“The Track ‘Breakfast Sun’ has a fairly long history, including a good amount of different paths taken with it. The very first sketch was ironically a more dry, club oriented track, but I ended up switching up the bass and synths completely, keeping only the percussion and vocal. It was a nice warm summer day and I added more stabby, uplifting chords, a groovy baseline, and a came up with the main theme/melody . All of the elements and arrangement came into place, and the track was approved by the label. Their only wish was to add a bridge in the middle, as the last verse and chorus weren’t flowing as well. Thus began the third and last transformation, where I added the Rhodes and MS-20 synth lines to connect the dots. In addiction, in a quest to make the track as good as possible, I replaced the percussive elements that were previously sampled. I rerecorded the Hi-Hats live, as well as the congas, as I just had gotten new ones for a band project. I was very happy with the result and for the label’s feedback, which indeed made the track more complete!”
It’s quite the spread of influences, with house and techno intersecting neatly into broken beat flavours for maximum originality and danceability. We like it to so much we’re premiering ‘Breakfast Sun’, with its nicely pacey groove and touches of jazzy keys in all the right places, right now, well ahead of its release date.
