Rich Ruth channels Sunn 0))) on new track from forthcoming Water Still Flows album

Rich Ruth has shared the video for the second track to emerge from his forthcoming third album Water Still Flows.

The promo for ‘Crying In The Trees’ is a radical departure from the Nashville producer’s trademark visualiser videos, usually beautiful but impressionistic affairs. This one is a straight up performance film, showing the Nashville-based musician and band in action.

He said of the track: “In the fall of 2023 while home on breaks from extensive touring, I unintentionally locked into a creative zone fusing samples and heavy drone guitar. I’m a huge fan of doom adjacent metal like Sunn 0))), Boris, The Melvins, Earth, and Sleep.

“After slowly acquiring a lot of vintage amps and guitars I realized I could get some of those sounds. I initially was aiming for something more minimal a la Sunn 0))), but decided to send the tracks to Reuben Gingrich to play drums on. My only guideline was that I wanted him to approach it like Elvin Jones playing stoner metal, and he delivered incredibly passionate intensity.

“Then I added Mikaela Davis on harp and Sam Que on tenor saxophone and it morphed into something different altogether. To me it sounds like Alice Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders playing with Sleep while a sampled flute/gamelan ensemble plays in the distance. It features Reuben Gingrich on drums, Mikaela Davis on harp, Sam Que on tenor saxophone, myself on guitar, bass, and samples.”
