Bardino – new album inspired by rare geological phenomenon

Rock’ music – but not as you know it

Bardino have been chatting to Juno Daily about the inspiration behind the broken beat/jazz trio’s imminent second album Memoria Da Pedra Mae.

This album is a very personal way of honoring the importance of memory,” says keyboardist Rui Martins, speaking on behalf of all three members, “particularly collective memory, and how it is equally important but also conflicting, serving a tension between the past, present, and future.”

He continues that they were inspired by the ‘pedras parideiras’, a rare geological phenomenon that occurs in Serra da Freita, in northern Portugal. “Hence the ‘Mother Stone’ (Memória da Pedra Mãe). The samples that can be heard during the album are fragments of memory that support the narrative of the album and were recorded in Arouca, near Serra da Freita.

“This album is way less based on electric instruments than the previous works. The acoustic piano has become, intentionally, a predominant instrument and this is new to what we have done so far, perhaps influenced by the work of artists like Chassol or Duval Timothy, who was someone we discovered during this process. We also wanted to bring in a less muscular drum set and preserve more of the natural dynamics that resulted from the live recordings, with fewer artifacts and more intentionally positioned electronic elements.

“We decided to expand collaboration with other artists, and in that respect, it’s also a different album from the previous one. We collaborated with four very talented artists, the pianist Sérgio Alves (Azar Azar), rapper and producer Hugo Oliveira (Minus & MRDolly), saxophonist Brian Blaker, and guitarist Leonardo Outeiro.
“It’s no coincidence that three of these four artists belong to Jazzego label, to which we’ve associated with for this album. The label’s aim to foster community growth seems to be yielding results, which are reflected in this ‘Memória da Pedra Mãe’.”
