Juno Daily – In The Mix: Derek Russo’s sunrise Jewel selection

Brooklyn at sunrise – and some all vinyl action

Brooklyn-based Derek Russo has released tunes on Make Mistakes, Perimeter Junk and his own label, Broad Channel, which is home to his forthcoming four track ‘Special Occasion’ EP. As a DJ he’s racked up more than two decades of experience, able to switch from slower bpm sets to house, disco and techno smashers and throws an underground party in New York called Xoloft.

To celebrate the EP’s release, he’s delivered a rather special mix for us at Juno Daily. We’ll let him do the talking.

“This mix is a portion of a 2.5 hour set played last weekend at a dark basement party in Brooklyn called Jewel, from 04:30-07:00. I was asked last minute to fill in and play the closing set for a friend who was sick. I’m mostly known for playing house and disco and leftfield stuff, and don’t get to play proper techno very often. I got to play a slew of records that I’ve never played out before, so I’m happy to put out this captured moment of a different side of me.

“The set starts off in Midwest beatdown mode and sets off on a dark and trippy journey where the records seemed to play themselves. There’s some breaky stuff, obscure Detroit gems, a sleaze bit, and a pivot into disco at the end.

“All vinyl on this one as well – I’m not a vinyl purist, there’s just no CDJs in the booth. But I do love playing a screen-free set, and of course that limitation forces a unique creativity. It’s a party that I’ve played before and am very comfortable at, and I felt free to play whatever I wanted. The sound system is incredible, and the small crowd was mostly my friends going for it. And that’s about as good as it gets.”
