NZ spinner pays tribute to the innovators of the past

New Zealand’s James Barrett makes superbly crunchy, musclebound but nuanced techno under the name Keepsakes, as well as running the prolific Haven label.  To help celebrate the release of his five track ‘Blunt Clout Trauma’ 12″ for Oaks, he’s created a vinyl only mix paying homage to the innovators of the 90s and 00s, some of whom are still around today, others long forgotten.

“With this all-vinyl mix I really wanted to showcase a lot of my influences from the 90s and early-mid 2000s,” he said, “alongside my recent EP on OAKS. Inside is a ton of speedy drum funk, kick-drum-pressure and secret rave weapons from 1995 to 2005 mixed with the B-side of my latest release to tie it all together. I think it’s always important to include a stack of old school records in my sets to pay tribute to the innovators who paved the way for what techno is today – many of whom are still active, while many have been almost totally forgotten by the majority of the current fanbase. By continuing to light up dancefloors with these tracks we keep their artistry alive and expose their creativity to a new generation – their contributions should not be forgotten.”
